New to 4x4 looking to buy Auckland area

Hi I'm Daniel.

I've recently moved to Auckland from Taupo. I managed to get out on a few runs with the Taupo Club during the winter and really enjoyed it.

I'm looking to get a 4WD, at the moment all i have for transport is my trusty mountain bike, which is great for around town but i don't want to be stuck in the city every weekend.

I have approx 4-6k to spend, and would like to get something that is a good all rounder and ready to go. Any suggestions? I've looked at a couple of Hilux's and Terranos from dealers and feel they're asking to much. I like the look of Pajeros but am yet to hear anything great about them, although i haven't heard anything bad about them either. My preference is to go with petrol rather than diesel but i could be convinced otherwise.

Any tips and advice would be great.

Cheers.

I've thought about these but not to sure, terranos an hiluxs seem like the safe choice. What are the common faults/down sides to the isuzu?

They have a rather low mounted alternator which is not so good if you're planning on going through any deepish water. I had to replace 3 alternators and 2 starters on my old Bighorn.

oh and if you mean a mu, well they have very little articulation that even if you spend a fortune doesn't improve much. great engines but they are just not that good off road.

we have had a couple of Pajero's and they were great. Surprised quite a few people. If you get one with a factory rear locker is a big bonus. They are pretty reliable, just stay away from the 2.5TD. The 2.8TD and the 3.5V6 are the ones to look out for.

I like the looks of the Pajero's and i've also heard good things about them, as well as bad things but i think the person dissing them was heavily biased towards Nissan. What particular model of Pajero came with the rear locker? or was it an option a new owner had to choose?

Cheers.

It was an option the new owner chose, well as far as I am aware, they seem to appear on all sorts of models. Good luck

Basically it was all the NZ new ones and soft top imports. If it is anything else then it is very rare.

I've been scanning the pages of trademe recently and come across this...

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Cars/Land-Rover/Series/auction-335319411.htm

Its a bit different and has a bit of character. Was wondering whats involved in an engine conversion? I've heard the 202 holden engine is a popular option as well as a v8 chev??

What are things to look out for if i was to look at a Landrover?

Back to dreaming on trademe.......

I've come accross a 1986 Safari on tradme all set up for cmaping etc.

It has a 3.2l diesel turbo, front left wheel bearing replaced, Auto hubs replaced with new manual hubs, Front leaf spring bushes,
Front break pads, Wheel bearings adjusted, Glow plugs changed before last winter, Cylinder head exhaust studs replaced and gasket as there was a small leak and the Oil and filter changed two weeks ago.

I'm considering having a look at it. What are somethings i should look out for with this year of safari?

Cheers
