Hi all,
New member. Bit of background, own a kzj71 prado SWB and have recently blown head so not very happy haha. Like the look of these 1uz swaps. Anyone heard of one in a KZJ71? Any idea on cost? Can i keep my 5spd manual box?
Cheers

Re: KZJ71 Blown head
Are you running the 2lte or 1kzte?, if you are going to replace the cracked head got for a genuine one... they are cheap enough ....remove the EGR and check the cooling etc whilst you are there
Otherwise go for the 1uz
Otherwise go for the 1uz

70 series prado (KZJ78) and 90 Series Prado (KZJ95)
Re: KZJ71 Blown head
If its a KZJ series it should be a 1KZTE.
Don't stuff aropund with a repaired head.... Get a new one..As Jerry said
I did my own about 5-6 years ago...Got a new head and swapped over all the stuff, got the valves cut, injectors overhauled (needed new tips) gaskets, exhaust manifold surfaced and oils, Cost me about $2500 all up.
At that stage it was cheaper than a 1UZ swap.....But if it did it again...
The engine swap would be tempting with all the good info out there and you can get one real cheap..

Re: KZJ71 Blown head
Personally, I would not waste my time fitting a 1UZ.
A suitably sorted KZ-TE, probably minus the E will give equal torque to a 1UZ. You can mod the 1KZ without reliability issues and you wont need to cert it.
Nathan from Kaiapoi Repowers, who formerly worked for Rick at 4wd Accessories, has tested equal jet boats with both these motors, both in the water at the same time. His Dad had set both boats up and does a lot of marine conversions using the KZ-TE motor. Now Nathan's business, I understand. The boats were dead equal in the water. Put an extra person in either boat and the other out dragged it.
Why all the marine conversions to deisel? Cos they're cheaper to run!
I own a KZJ-71 and have had to replace the head at 150k. Re-coed injector tips, EGR removal and a well ported head made a HUGE difference in torque.
The Kaiapoi Repowers motors have upped fuel pressures and more boost but have not gone down the road of porting, so there are more easy gains still available.
