removing chrome from wheels

Post by lilpigzuk »

Ive got a set of 15 x 7 spoked rims which when new, would of be all nicely chromed. However age has taken its toll and approx 50% of the chrome has had rust come through while the rest is still all shiney.
According to Mr Sandblaster up here, chrome is an absolute biarch to remove hence he said you could be looking at quite a few $$$ to get it all removed :(
So do I remove what rust I can and scuff the chrome up hoping the paint will stick or can I sit there with a flame and burn the chrome off or do I put a soft sanding disc on the grinder and sit down for an afternoon??

Anyone got any ideas? :?

Try going to your local electroplaters and see if they will strip them for you.
We have had that done at work no probs

Should be possible to chemically remove it shouldn't it? When you have bumpers and stuff re-chromed they strip the remains of the old chrome off with an acid bath then clean up and re-plate. So you really just need someone to do the first bit and give you them back, surely an electro-plater in town would be able to do that pretty cheap I'd think.
Cheers.
