Even though landcruisers are heavy pigs, they look like quite alot of fun. I did think about selling the landrover and buying one, but the landy is so much cooler

. Buy an open top vehicle, you will enjoy it.

Definitely buy one, I have two now and love them. Reckon the only thing that competes for value for money for fun and capability per dollar is a (Don't laugh!) Lada Niva. I had a Niva for 6 months or so before getting the FJ and not much stopped it, I paid $200 for it and had so much fun.
That was the idea behind getting the FJ, they're cheap and pretty capable as standard and there's loads you can do to make them better without having to spend a fortune so you can gradually develop it. Check out some of the mods Wopass has done.
I have always had a bit of a soft spot for Land Rovers though being a Pom.
Let us know what yer planning on buying, someone here will always be able to advise whatever you're thinking of getting.

They are still out there, I just found a solid '73 with not much rust at all with a 302Windsor V8 certified and reg on hold for $500 on Trademe. Needs some bits and pieces done to the electrics, well to be fair pretty much none of the lights work

but it's basically sound and running.
Like Turoa says keep an eye on Trademe, Buy-Sell is still good too. 2 grand should pick you up something that needs work.

I saw this a few days ago, looks a decent truck for the money and it's met reserve. I haven't had too much hassle with spares but I guess it may get worse with time and I've got quite a lot of spares with the first truck I bought. Certainly finding any in scrappies any more is getting really tough. I originally bought the 2nd truck with the V8 for spares but it's turned out to be tidier than I thought so I'm not keen to break it but I reckon buying a whole parts truck is probably a reasonable idea.

Project truck here:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... d=58146342
Reg on hold & no WOF but came up with a fixed price offer of $500 when the auction closed with no bids. Could be worth asking for a re-list & have a good look at it. If nothing else - probably a good parts truck if you can find another to work on.

Wopass is right. There is no other truck like the old FJ40's! It's a real 4x4 and is build to last (but we all know that) and it looks like a real 4x4, not the nice soft shopping trolley 4x4's they make theses days.
But then, that's just my oppinion

pull the 1F out and bolt the 2F in, easy as that.....except that the engine weighs a ton

...... but just bolt it up
i will be listing my old 2F on TM at some stage soon..... mint runner with a very relaxed history

only driven on sundays..... literally !

oh yea

where r u located?
im lookin for a pto winch that would suit it to, what are they like to get hold of?
Posted: Mon Jun 04, 2007 9:41 pm
by wopass
bit of drilling and this will fit
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =102831740
depends on what your transfer case is as to wether the PTO will fit but thats a good start. if you have a split case it will bolt up but more likely you have the early case which is the solid cast case and it wont fit, but all the other stuff is there that you need.
im hamilton, north island mate so the cost to get my old engine to you would make it not worth while, plent of 2F's for sale around the place. do a search for fj40 on trade me and you will see a couple of parts trucks down your way

pto winch continued
