i was driving up the hill out of town this evening when all of a sudden i lost heaps of power and the engine was sounding real rough, :( pulled over and listened for a while and i sounds as if she is only firing on 5, a there is a click or loud tap coming from the side where the inlet manifold is. also a rich petrol smell in exhaust. i managed to get it home but stalled twice and i dont know if i should run it anymore? :?
its a 95 xj. 4l

I bought my '95 XJ 4.0l off Trade-me about 4 years ago with a rough running motor. It turned out there was one of the pushrods was bent, that was caused by one of the lobes on the cam shaft being abnormally worn down.

Might be worth taking off the rocker cover and checking the feel of all the pushrods to make sure they are all still straight.

If one of the cylinders is not firing properly the fuel won't be being burnt - hence the strong smell of un-burnt fuel.

check for a crack in ya exhaust manifold fish ..if there is it will cause air to be sucked into the exhaust ..the 02 sensor read this as a very lean mixture so steps up fuel going into the cylinder...she will be running too rich ,,,, new manifold maybe ,,,,was it still shifting alright ......l

ha i would have if i had a spare 10 g. :!:
talked to the doctor and its as we thought, busted exhaust valve spring. turns out to be pretty sludged up inside looks like someone missed a few oil changes. any way, putting a new spring in asap and if it gets it going on all 6 again ill go from there. thinking about a transplant and keeping the one i got for a spare :?
if its bent the valve or broken it ill have to any way, for the price of it being repaired might as well huh.
