turboing a 2.8 (3L)

Well I tried using the search function but it kept saying that 2.8 and 3l where too common and it was going to ignore them even when i put a + in front! So i was looking at 58 pages of toyota related turbo posts and quickly got frustrated.

Who on here has turboed a 2.8 before. How do they go? What issues do you have with overheating? I do quite a bit of towing, the na 2.8 is faarking slow up the hills and even into the wind on the flat! but I love that it will slug away with my foot hard on the floor all day long without overheating (partly due to the good old toyota temp gauge) Has anyone done any considerable towing with a turboed 2.8?

What sort of reliability can you expect once doing a turbo conversion? Has anyone had one running for a reasonable amount of time? Obviously it's not the best idea in the world to wack a turbo on a 20 year old motor that had done high ks. Mine says 370,000 on the clock it has apparently had a new bottom end at 300,000 as well as a new head about 340,000 and when they did the head the put in a thicker gasket because they were thinking of turboing it. I don't think the rings have been done

I want more power but I want reliability am I pushing shit up hill?

Cheers,
Pete

I recentley put a 3l into my landcruiser prado and had the decision to turbo it,Which was going to be the easier option because of exhaust etc allready being there,Or go N/a.I spoke to the fellas who i got my motor off at Yukkon disel spares here in ChCh and they both had turbo'd 3l's (one with a BIG huffer) and had turbo'd alot of 3ls,All they said was it comes down to maintenance as long as you look after them they are fine
Cheers

the big thing with L series motors is how much blow by its got. if its bad now it will be really bad when turbo'ed.

If its got a good head and compressions then go for it.
i have a freind that put a ct20 (off a 2lt) on his 3l and it works amazingly well. He also put a new radiator in when he did it and i have seen on his boost gauge that he is running 12-13pound of boost maby even more
I would personly keep it around 6-8.
Good luck.

Cheers for the offer. I take it you are in chch? I have moved to qtwn for 5 months and haven't changed my profile. Might come have a look next time I am in chch if that's where you are.
