Auto trans in FJ45????

I'm looking for ideas or previous experience.
I've got a mate who's left knee has packed it in, but really loves his old 40. He no longer likes his clutch and wants to go auto. He's been told that putting a chev with a 400 trans is the way to change his truck over to auto.

I was thinking more of finding a 60 series cruiser with an F motor and auto trans(A440) and that should almost bolt up. Can't say I remember seeing one though. Could always go a step further and find an 80 series petrol and use the auto(A442) off that.

Let me know what you think. Has anyone done it before?

Cheers

G

stories I've heard over the years all point to the chev/chev combo dude

lighter motor, cheaper to run, more torque

but more importantly it will make the right sound

I know what you mean, but it's a work truck and just needs to run.The engine is sweet and it's set up for LPG.

Just thought it would be the cheapest option to run a factory auto.

if you found a 60 series with the 3F and auto that would make a primo conversion as the motor will bolt right in and only a Gbox X member to sort out (as well as levers linkages, shafts etc but easy stuff)

the 3F makes heaps more grunt than the 2F also and a bit cheaper to run...tho not much.

Yep. That is my plan exactly.
So now all i need is a wrecked FJ61 with an Auto.
I just don't think that there are many around.
