Flashing O/D Light and No Speedo

Post by Sir Plug »

Help

Before I spend a few hours under the car, has anybody had the same issues? On a run North over the weekend, the overdrive failed. I had no o/d all the way up to Russell. When driving around locally the next day, the speedo failed but o/d worked intermittently. On the run back o/d worked for the last hour of the drive as well as the speedo. I'm hoping it's a broken wire or a dirty connection but if not, what could I be looking at??

Cheers

Did you have no overdrive? or was it the O/D light flashing?
If it was a flashing light there is a good chance it is sensor failure somewhere and it is flashing a code at you.
Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

No o/d and the light was flashing once every second.

Hi Yah
Have a read of this...
http://autorepair.about.com/library/faqs/bl153g.htm

You have a fault in the system.
Could be several things.
But as your speedo was playing up also...
I would take a punt its the speed sensor / pickup or wiring in that part.
There are two... One in the gearbox and one in the dash (if it is a cable driven speedo)

The link above should help you.

Have fun and tell us all what you find.

No over drive can be an ECU fault...... capacitors dead or leaking & munted tracks on board.... a not uncommon thing.

Just a quick update. The car ran fine for a bit and then started with the same problem again. The difference this time was there was no flashing O/D light. Having checked everything through, I have found a fault with the ECU. I've opened it up and found one of the pcb's has burnt and some solder on a capacitor has a poor connection. I've cleaned the circuit with meth's and sorted the dry joint and so far....all is good.

I shall be looking for a 2nd hand ECU to put in temporarily and get this one properly repaired, as I believe the repair may only be short term....
