Snorkel advice for a newbie (1992 Safari)

Post by gav »

I've got a 4.2 diesel 1992 Nissan Safari with the high roof and want to fit a snorkel. Any advice regarding fitting a snorkel? Things to look out for, makes that are better than others, etc.?

Anyone recommend any good places to get one fitted in Christchurch?

Thanks in advance for any advice,
Gav

Hi Gav, IMHO i'd stick with a well known brand, Safari, TJM, etc, as they seem to put in a lot or R&D in to there products, although some people seem to build a decent bent pipe set up, what ever it is just make sure it is well sealed! Another thing to consider is the ability to be able to replace the top hood with a pre cleaner for real dusty days when traveling in convoy on gravel roads.
Plenty of places to get one fitted if you don't want ta do it ya self: 4wd Accessories, 4wd Up Grades, Monroes on Blenham rd to name a few. Happy hunting dude.

Hi reeceb, cheers for that - sounds pretty straight forward then - just go for good brand. Always good to get a recommendation about where to fit stuff ;)

Was worried some might let heavy rain in when driving or be made of poor plastics that don't resist NZ's UV rays very well.

airflow are cheap and easy enough to fit. Some say they are a shit brand, but I have had mine hard up against tress, dirt banks and rocks and it hasn't broken. In fact it went through the windscreen one day. That strong enough for ya. Spends every day in the sun as well. No signs of failing. Don't get sucked into a big name brand for big dollars when a cheap one will do.

yup pretty straight forward, i did mine. as long as you tape the template on correctly you shouldnt have a problem. only thing i had with mine has an intermediate pipe that runs inside the gaurd (TJM snorkel) you cant easily get the bolt for this through as theres a battery in the way that doesnt exist on the aussie patrol. I just removed the stud out of the pipe and left it out. I removed the air box from the gaurd and replaced it with alloy pipe and a silicone joiner so its not moving in a hurry. also if you model has the plastic flares some of the clips are riveted to the gaurd and these have to some off to get the plastic gaurd liner off to reach inside the gaurd to bolt snorkel on

The snorkel hats are designed to seperate water, to a point so don't panic.

Cheers darinz - good to know. I'm a bit of a newbie to the 4wd beasts, but enjoying the experience so far! Got mine to get access to new areas and had a fairly swift and deepish river crossing a month or so back which made me worry about hydraulicing the engine. Figured I'd remove the worry a bit with a snorkel!

Had a snorkel fitted this week - whoop whoop! Peace of mind when doing those river crossings now! Had an Ironman (Safari copy apparently) fitted in the end.

However... I was quite surprised to see that they removed the pre-airfilter when installing it. Is this usual? Well, I assume the unit removed was a pre-filter as there's now a space in the engine bay right at the front front, passenger side where the hose comes across from snorkel. Looking in my manual seems to suggest it was a pre-filter, but can't for the life of me remember what was in the spot from memory.
