just been out for a play in my disco and had to be towed home by a toyota :x the drive shaft rubber doughnut split in two!!! what the hell were landrover thinking when they fitted the discos with this??
does anyone one know a quick cheap way to fit it up with a real uj?? can i just get me a range rover shaft and diff flange to fit it or early disco maybe?

Use an early disco one with the 4 bolt drive flange on the diffhead. The locating pin for your current flange can be a real bitch to get out. Had to use a slide hammer with the correct threaded bolt (M6 for memory?) attached.

forgot to mention there is a thick spacer you need as well (behind 4 bolt drive flange)

Good pictorial here

Im wondering what I should do with my V8 LR. Because the landy is so short and the discovery gearbox is so loooong, the rear drive shaft length is about half of the factory discovery length, increasing the driveshaft angle.

Because I need to get my driveshaft shortened, I was thinking of getting an additional UJ welded in and leaving the rubber doughnut for additional vibration reduction.

Im still a bit undecided as it might just be another thing to go wrong and I wasn't aware it was this straight forward to change to a normal driveshaft arrangement...

I think I used the front shaft out of my series 3, was a tight fit but didnt need any machining or anything. But then I used the disco chassis so everything was standard length minus the 12 inches cough cough I mean 11 inches cut out of the middle.

Hmmm... interesting. Might have a look at some series driveshafts then. Could be an easy option.

Definitely loose the rubber donut. They don't last off road and give no end of problems at times.

Change the diff/drive shaft flange to the later 4 bolt version. Remember to get the spacer to fit within the flange as well.

Could be worth inveestigating getting a wide angle UJ drive shaft with long travel shaft spline as well due to being so short as you will now have increased articulation.

I have eyeballed up some out of a long wheelbase series 2. The front will need cut to fit into the back, and the back will need cut to fit in the front. If it vibrates like nothing else, I will look into getting something a bit flasher for the back.

Will still need the later flange. Thanks for the pointer about the washer.
