Afternoon all, just looking for a back up on my opinion on what needs replaced on my 24v 3B 60 series.
I jump-started a mate's Pajero last week, didn't notice but he'd actually put the leads on the 2nd battery, ie the one which sits at 12V at the negative post and 24V at the positive one. Since then the charging on the gauge on the dash is showing way over 24v all the time. Used to basically act as you would expect and only changed after the jump-start.
My thinking is that dropping the "middle" of the battery chain to ground has screwed the voltage regulator, would people agree with that suspicion?
If so it looks to me like it's sitting halfway along the inner guard, driver's side although there are a couple of similar looking boxes by a relay on the passenger side. If that's it then shouldn't be a big deal to replace.

The jump has caused a spike in the system and something might have gone pop ....

Get a multimeter ... Check your battery without motor running, make sure it has not killed any battery's. should get about 24.6V or do each one separately should get about 12.4V or above on each.
Next with motor on, should get 26 to 28V pending on your state of battery's .... might be your voltmeter in your dash giving you wrong readings! If not, then regulator, which is part of your alternator. You can pull apart and fix if you know how?? If not take to auto electrician.

as said either your guage is toast or your voltage reg is toast

awesome thanks guys, I'll stick the multimeter on and see if it's the gauge or not, gauge has always been fine which is why I suspected the regulator. Pretty sure it's a seperate unit though according to the manual, not part of the alternator. Can anyone confirm/deny?

No worries, did you get it sorted? What was the problem in the end?

Had it in at the mechanics for a couple of other things so I asked him to take a look. He reckons the charging level is what is to be expected on a 24v system which I'm not sure I agree with. Surely once the batteries are up to charge the alternator should drop back close to 24v which it isn't.
He did point out one of the batteries has a dead cell and isn't performing very well though so possibly the jump start - which was off that battery - was enough to push it over the edge. Maybe that's why the gauge now shows a high charge rate constantly as that battery is needing constant charging.

I'm just pretty certain that before the jump start the gauge used to drop back down to 24 once it'd been running for a wee while and it solidly sits up around 30 now all the time.

yea man my 60 sits about the same as that on the voltage gauge as it has to be over 24v to keep juice up to the batts,yes the they are external regulated,have had a few problems with regs and alts on the 24v systems,i asked aswell as the old 24volts can melt things pretty well
