Diff ratios for Bighorn

Post by Mattman »

What ratios are available for these?

Stock as a rock 3.1TD manual and I am going to fit lockers and 33's so would like to sort out diff ratio's if at all possible.

Cheers
Matt.

the 3.1 ratio is 4.3 an the 2.8 ratio is 4.56.
there are lockers available i beleive. a good tight lsd in the rear is a cheaper option than a locker

Probably not worth the cost and time to swap to 4.5s from 4.3s.

Haven't seen any lsds for sale yet. Would like LSD rear locker front ideally.

Hey matt ive got 3.1TD SWB Bighorn just done a rear lsd (found one out at pick a part) got it shimmed up so nice and tight, works mint worth doing. Found my ratio was 4.5 not 4.3? Think theres a few changes over the years/models etc.

Alot of mus are 4.56, and so are some of the wide body 'R' spec 2.8 bighorns from 87-92.

However most 2.8 bighorns are in fact 4.31. Have owned a couple and worked on more and all 4.3s.

The idea to put in a tightened lsd is a good one. Have used both air and autolockers in various combinations in offroaders, and most recently took the air locker out of rear of my 2.8LWB and put back the tight lsd. Found no discernible difference after 30 4wd trips.

To make the lsd bite very well, run Redline Heavy Duty Shockproof diff oil. Very good stuff - expensive but easily best of diff oils I've tested.

I agree with mudgripz on the ratios, mines a 2.8 non widebody LWB and its 4.3

As far as cheapness goes, I bought a 2.8 rodeo LSD centre for $50 and paid an expert $200 to shim it up, a lot cheaper than a locker.

Prob dont need to worry about changing ratios with 33s unless maybe you have an auto (4 gears vs 5). The higher ratios are kind of nice a lot of the time anyway and the 2.8 is less powerful than your 3.1 (mines not even intercooled)

This is nice to hear mudgripz that you dont find much difference between the air locker and the LSD. But you would probably notice a big difference if you were getting a rear wheel off the ground often?

Is there a chinese air locker for the 2.8 front yet and if so have you tried that out?

Isn't the 2.8 and 3.1 front diff the same? If so I started a groupbuy for it over on clubisuzu.com

Ah yep im on that forum too (you can probably figure out who I am) and I know the post you mean.

I didnt think they were the same, but someone will know for sure.

Last time I checked the chinese made a rear for the 2.8 but not a front air locker.
