Just wondering what these are needed for? is it only necessary when you have modded your engine?

Its a good warning gauge of how hard your engine is working...

tells you how hot the exhaust gas is.
Only really used on diesels when changing the amount of fuel or air going in.

For a deisel offroad they are important. Get your airfilter blocked a bit and watch it climb! And yes I have had this happen, it was at the Kiwi Challenge in 2005 and it got to the point that could only get 12psi (down from 20psi) due to the dust blocking it. The end result was about an extra 100* on the pyro so without it I could have melted the motor but it gave the warning so stopped and found the problem. (after the stage of course)

also its just a good idea to have one just to keep an eye on the motor. as darinz said about filter blocking up but you can get other problems like egr sticking open, crap fuel, over fueling, sucking in engine oil and other problems which will give higher normal readings.
handy for fault finding.
also comes in handy for seeing how hot the turbo is before shutting the motor off.
