Today I picked up some second hand 50mm raised rear coils for my surf that I got off trade me for $10 and they came with two Rancho 5000 shocks for the rear axle. I think these are poked but just want to make sure
when the shocks are not installed should they be extended to their full length? The ones i have were compressed when i got them and with a fair bit of effort I can pull them out and push them in. I would have thought that without the weight of the truck on them they would be fully extended whats the verdict - bin them or would they still work in reoplacement of the standard shocks?

the fact that you can move them with a bit of difficulty is a good sign if you could easily pull them in and out that would be very bad
you may be getting confused with those gas hood strut type things which are usually fully extended

To be extended or self extend they need to be gas shocks they may be just oil.

no not sure what sort of coils they are - thought for $10 bucks they would be worth it though!!
Well maybe the shocks arent stuffed as I thought id say you guys are right and the ones i had been thinking of were gas shocks ( the only ones i ever pulled out of a vehicle were in my old escort!! and im sure they were gas)
Might just pay to put them in abd see how they go if they really are stuffed it shouldnt be too hard to put the standard ones back in I asssume?

$10!

Good score
Rancho 5000 shocks are just a heavy-valved oil shock - not a gas charged shock. They will stay wherever you leave them... if they are really stiff, then they are probably still in good nick.
You might hate them tho... for Surfs and Hiluxes and other light 4WDs I've found they are waaay to heavy in the valving and tend to make trucks ride like they have no springs at all. Still, if you don't like em you'll get waay more than $10 for them

well i got the first side installed today and there is a definite height difference from standard

hopefully get the other side done tommorow and will have to do a test run but at the moment im pretty pleased with the extra height - and yor right $10 is a steal if they work out ok luckily i can get on trademe at work and was able to make sure i won the auction
