engine transplant
hi guys
im looking at putting a 3.0 turbo surf motor in my 1996 2.8 LN106 for more power and towing capacity.
would there be any problems with the bell housing matching up to the motor, as id like to keep my current gearbox.
any advice would be appreciated
cheers

Re: engine transplant
What engine are you looking at?
1kzte or are you building a 5L-t?

5L+GT35@21psi= 223RWHP
5L+GT35@30+psi= 287RWHP....

Re: engine transplant
1kzte is the better of the two but the 5l is the easiest.
5l should be a fairly straight forward bolt up job. however its atmo not turbo, so would need turbo kit. 2lt (2.4 turbo) turbo gear can be made to fit but they choke on the 2.8 let alone a 3 litre. a better manifold and turbo would go a lot better. plus need pump modding/tuning.
1kzte, if i remember right needs engine mounts changed. no idea on gearbox. also needs ECU to be wired in, possibly a few changes to dash to get rev guage to work. or convert it to mechanical injection.

Re: engine transplant
what if i found a 3.0 turbo diesel out of one of the older hilux's? would that be a better idea?
Re: engine transplant
older hiluxs never came out with a 3 litre turbo so it will be a transplant.
just check its not a 3l 2.8 with a turbo.

Re: engine transplant
The 5L conversion is the easiest way to go, In saying that the 5L engine can be quite an expensive piece of kit..
Mine is only running 9psi through a stock 2lte turbo, 5L Mechanical fuel pump with 1/4 turn fuel increase and Its more powerful than a 1KZ-Te (well more than the 2 I have compared it against).

in that case your talking about the 1kzte...same advice as per above as its basically the same as the surf motor.

Re: engine transplant
ok so the big question is where would be the best place to look for one?
im willing to put some time into rebuilding one, or if anyone can give me advice on where to get a complete engine would be great
cheers

Re: engine transplant
honestly, it would be easier if you give us the engine code off the body tag
5L+GT35@21psi= 223RWHP
5L+GT35@30+psi= 287RWHP....

probably easiest to get a complete wreck. that way you get all the bits they often leave in the vehicle when removing the motor.

You are WAY better off trying to find a Intercooled 1kzte from a jap import surf or prado, they dont seem to suffer from the overheating issues as much as the non-intercooled version, they also had a much bigger radiator so it might be worth getting that at the same time plus they had a litte more power and a decent jump in torque.
Or if you cant find one i'd also recommend the 5L conversion with turbo set-up etc as the older 1kz's are not really a great motor esp when getting on with the kms.
Re: engine transplant
sorry mate I just read the first post...
Anyway the easiest swap (and by far the cheapest) would be a 5L.
Then turbo it..
The 1KZ is a bit of a mission with engine mounts etc, Ive done the same conversion and I don't even need certification whereas with the 1kz you will for sure.
