Hey guys, think my terrano is using oil, and i cant really see distinctive blue smoke, Heaps of black tho. Maybe some blue mixed in there. How would i find out if its rings or turbo?

How much do rings cost? and if it was them, i would need gaskets etc? how much would it cost total?

Sticks it back at the top of the list of new posts.

Maybe compression test it to see if its reading lower than normal??

Ok how much do compression tests cost? I'll see if SIT have compression testers. cheers

done comp test today.

Cyl 1 - 460psi
Cyl 2 - 440psi
Cyl 3 - 440psi
Cyl 4 - 420psi

That seems pretty good to me?

Rule is with compressions;
10% from top to bottom.
Yours fits in this range.....just.
I have been looking at your posts, can't help thinking that the black smoke, using oil, down on power are all related.
Try these things,
Clean out intake manifold and cross over (they fill with oily gunk)
Remove all emission control gear (including the butterfly thing)
Test boost pressure
Check mufflers for blockages (they block up over time)
If all that has been done, then disconnect waste-gate pressure tube and block up. Take it for a quick run. Listen for the relief valve working.
Until this is done, it could be anything :?

My suspicion is turbo is choked (ether intake or exhaust) or getting near farked.

Good luck.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,

Hey mate cheers for that, I'll try get those things you have listed done. I know my air filter needs changing, its filthy, that might help abit with black smoke. And I overfilled my oil the other day, hasnt seemed to use any since....?
I think it is possibly the turbo thats buggered, Its covered in oil, But Im not down on power, i think it goes ok for a t27t.

Also i just fueled up after my first tank.
62 litres = $84
62L = 424kms........

To me that seems abit overpriced? It costs the same to run as my sr20det with is on 95... And thats before road users. Is that normal? I did do a 2.5hour 4wd trip which only got like 12kms though.

Mate, I can go from home to Woodhill (40ish K's per way) and back, 4wd all day in low, never turn the engine off and it only uses 1/4 of a tank. Not sure on the road mileage, but it is up around 700+ K's from a tank. It is more economical than my Bounty 2.5 turbo.
It is good distance considering my fuel pump leaks too :(
Getting back to yours, air filter is the first thing I would of done even before posting the question. There are very basic principles when it comes to diesel preformance, free flow of air, exhaust and accurate metering and atomization of fuel. Start disconnecting things one by one, see what makes the most difference.
When the right conditions are meet the TD27 goes like hell and the factory stuff do nothing but choke them up :roll:

Cheers,
Simon.

when you say you think it is using oil do you mean you think you might be able to see/smell a bit of blue? or do you mean your topping up a litre everytime you fill up?. It's obviously not a new car and if its just dropping on the dipstick a little between oil changes then pfft forget about it but if its chomping 4 litres ever 100k's then of course its a bigger problem. A few more details would certainly help.

Great advice! Always look for the simplest things before ripping everything apart!! :D

Fuel filter can have an effect on economy as well ... but number 1 is air filter

A post note with the air filter;
If you run a blocked filter, the suction from the in-take of the turbo can suck the oil out of the rocker cover, feeding the oil into the engine to be burned and clog up the manifold even faster.

Ok i put new filter in today so will see how that goes.

By I think that its using oil, i mean i got it and it had half on dipstick, The next day after driving say 150kms, it had 1/3, so i thought it must be using oil, i then over filled oil abit, thinking it wouldnt matter cos its using it, but now it hasnt used anymore for 600kms... so im unsure if it is even using any, but every now and again im pretty sure i can see blue smoke, hard to tell due to so much black.

Also mine is auto, so it will use abit more fuel, but still shouldnt be that much. When at 100km/h im sitting onn 2.4k-2.6k revs.. I thought the mistral that my parents had sat on like 2.2k, so im not sure if its reaching top gear??

Today i was at 100kp/h and i would take my foot off, then accelerate abit and the revs would go to like 3k but no action, felt like slipping clutch and would slowly come back to 2.5k

Also I'm looking at a manual terrano, it has a cracked head, but only 1k, and if i chuck a new head on itll be good to go.
Were Is the best/Cheapest place to get a head gasket for it? how much would it be worth? How long would a head swap take?
