New member, '90 Safari LWB High roof: TD42 Auto.

First 4WD, but owned plenty of AWD's...

Good cond (has done 70,000km on fully rebuilt motor, and trans fully rebuilt about 10,000km ago, no rust), but more or less standard.

Only mods so far:

Bullbar
15x8 alloy rims (high offset)
converted aircon to onboard air
WRX STI RA buckets
Sport wheel
moded air inlet (removed original air filter and holder and replaced with airbox/panel filter from a 2002 Subar RA Spec C and an inlet pipe)
Extractors
Lock up switch
Spec C Cup holders (can't live without them)...

Tidy looking truck. What was the point of changing the airbox set up? Any difference?

Good to see you have mud flaps that actually flap unlike the factory ones
You might find you need to replace those flares with some rubber ones soon as well as they tend to snap off at the mount when you have a bit of a rub against anything =/ You can get some good coin for them if they are in good condition.

remove the big plates under the truck so you do have a bulldozer. front sway bar also should go too, rear bumpest break ya tailights and front on get knocked in to your front tyres

I went in to buy a new filter for the original air box and i think it was something like $38; i also noted the pre filter was a bit restrictive and the plastic hose from it to the metal on the filter housing was a poor fit so thought i'd improve it...

Having owned (and obviously modded) many Subaru's, i had a few bits and pieces laying around. I had replaced my airbox on my Spec C with an HKS item so had that there, plus several high flow washable filters; i figured how hard can it be?

Made sure the air box fitted, then went to an exhaust shop to get a pipe made up and they had an off cut off of a V8 exhaust which was the perfect shape...$5

Just got two silicone joiners and all done.

Definately flows better, less restrictive and i just wash out the filters...

I have also removed the air con condensor, radiator etc...
Cut the air con pipes off, put a filter on the inlet, a hose fitting on the outlet and plumbed an oiler in as well; now i have onboard air for approx $50 Pumps up a 31 10.5/15 from 20psi to 40psi in 1 min...

When money allows, i'll be looking to do a 2 inch lift and maybe 33 inch tyres...

Good idea to give her better flow, I was lazy and just replaced my filter with a uni filter, but made a lot of difference, plus as you say you just wash it

Coxsy was thinking of removing my front sway bar, is there any WOF / Certification problems with doing that??

as long as as all mounting bits can't be seen, who can say if it was there in the first place! , mine never had a front sway bar when i brought it, so never a issue, did remove the rear one for awhile after the disconnect died but refitted it handles better now,
asked my wof guy today should i fit the 33 muds back on for a wof or leave the simexs on , simexs are fine

So the short, English, answer is yes haha.

Depends on the WOF guy. My front one has always been on for a WOF so no issues but have read some people getting away without one and other getting pulled up on it.

Also an insurance might be an issue if it is certed as having one then you roll it without one on...

Have a look on there.

Some people run a sway bar in the rear to force the front to work a bit more but a it can also bust your sway bar (which makes it a bit pointless).

I have done the odd trip without it on and have not really noticed any huge gains, so, it seems without a bit of coin put into it the front end is always going to be crap.

If you are keen on a superflex arm let me know so we can save on shipping
Tossing up on one of those or a turbo now that I have some coin again.

Early Safari's like my 1988 LWB Model Didn't have the front Sway bar fitted from factory as standard, they where a factory option, My old Wof guy said they check the year against one being fitted. pre 89 is fine with no front Swaybar according to him.

I put mine on weight bridge at local daily plant.
LWB hi roof,35"s inc spare,bar work etc inc me was 2490kg(1/4 tank fuel/basic recovery gear)
