Major vibrating Front end

Post by vandewc »

I have had trouble with the front end lately.
Yesterday i was driving home when all of a sudden there was a loud vibrating noise coming from the front end.
I slowed down to a complete stop and the noise stopped. I tried driving off again and as soon as I got up to about 20 kmh it started again.
I have been driving around with my manual hubs locked in but not in 4wd. I tried taking then out of 4wd and driving with them locked in using 4wd, it made no difference.
The faster i go the more intense the vibration through out the whole car.

Does anyone now of a good mechanic that knows a bit about 4wd hubs etc in christchurch that I could take it to. I have taken it to 2 garages and they told me compeletly different things. And when checked out it wasnt that.

Terrano D21 1993 2.7 turbo diesel

One told me he had fixed it by putting the 4wd hub assembly back in after I had removed it.

Another said I need CV, Hub and bearings. They also took the inner 4wd out. (as i had done previously- broken) Bearing were fine, hubs need replacing but i dot think that was making the noise and cv i think is ok. Their is minor play at the back of the bearing before it attaches to the cv, this we think is a broken needle bearing.

Start with the basic and get the wheels balanced and any tyre shop should be able to do that.

Then check all ball joints and wheel bearings.

Then start looking at hub issues etc.

what type of truck is it? I had a similar issue with my old surf. crazy vibration up front and they only way to stop it was to slow down to a near stop. Asked on here and mike pointed me toward corroded front axles.(on ifs the bit after the outer cv i think its the axle by then...) as it was free spinning it would catch and the vibrate around as it spun in the hub. Pulled them out and gave them a quick clean up with emery cloth and a bit of grease and good as new.

Sorry see it's a terrano. Could still be this. Had a few mechanics stumped when it happened to me.
