Hi I am looking at doing an engine conversion for my gutless 1991 2.8l Diesel Double cab Hilux.
I have several options but a budget of around 5grand
My options are;
1UZ-FE
1KZ-TE
or to turbo the exsisting 2.8l diesel I have.
Any comments or sugestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Hiluxhunter,
My friend has a Hilux and has put in a 3.1 Turbo Diesel in it and it goes very well has alot of grunt.
Other than that I dont know much about this sort of stuff, and Welcome to the site.

another option is supercharge the 2.8 ... look up bulletproofs hilux thread, otherwise 1kz or 1uz are good

Where are you?
What do you use your hilux for?
Do you prefer the sound of a screaming v8 over a cheaper to run diesel

?
Do you plan on driving it in somewhere an driving it out finished or can you do some of the work yourself?
Some things for you to think about

My votes for the v8

Im in albany, an am planning on using it for casual 4wding and towing aswell as a daily driver, the sound of a v8 is very nice indeed!

If i was you, i would turbo the 2.8, Which would cost about 1k~, Then use the other 4k on lift kit, tyres etc etc

It would cost alot more for 3.0L turbo engine, and then fitting it.

If you decide 1UZ get a hold of Brendan,
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motor ... 858050.htmHe specialises in that conversion, as far as price drive in drive out might be a bit over 5g

Turbo it

Cheapest option by far.
That is unless the motor is getting tired.

yeah dude, most drive in/out conversions are at least double your 5g budget
all I can say is unless you have the skills and a few of them, then its gonna be better to pay someone a lot more for a drive in/out conversion than attempting it yourself.
seen far too many folks attempt the 1UZ and end up spending lots more than if they took it to the pros

Look around for a Surf with a poked 2Lte engine, strip Manifold and Turb of it and bolt on to your 2.8.
Turn the fuel up a little bit and go for gold

For 5k I would be looking at a rebuild and then turbo depending on the condition of your motor currently. Most of them have done high ks. Though a 2.8 with low ks will fetch you close to $1800 which would help towards your conversion (more like 1200 for one in not as good condition.
Cheers,
Pete

There is always a 5L turbo swap, mine is more than adequate for towing, cost well under 5k!

theres an A grade mechanic in the taupo area (if hes still alive) who will swap an engine out for you (if its straight forward, bolts up to the g/box and mounts without modifying, simple electrics etc) for bugger all in labour .... he did one for me $150... only took him an hour an a half, then I just took it down the road and got the dump pipes / exhaust sorted out and it was good to go... 6?-7? years later and I haven't had an issue with his work yet except for the water pump and oil pump wearing out but thats just wear n tear....
shop around - get quotes . . .
give it a few days and I will tell you who NOT to take it to
I am dealing with an engine conversion at present, a mate that had one done went totally sour, $10 grand, took 3 months instead of 3 weeks like they said, and its back in the shop already for serious modifications etc because the "specalist engine conversion" mechanic had no idea what he was doing.... was not suitable even to be driven on the road safely, so beware the cowboys.

Why not sell your truck, take that money plus the $5k you have and buy one that already has a 1uz in it...

6 grand to turbo the old engine is high, for that amount you could go for the 1uz... v8 you will get so much more power and fun for the money... id go for the v8, very easy conversion
