from memory mate you need a 12mm spanner and a 10mm spanner and thats about it, 1 ,10mm nut to remove main power feed to starter and 2 ,12mm bolts to bell housing. as well as just pull the starter wire plug off.
its been a long time since i did one but should be close.

thanks

i have pulled a few starters off other vehicles over the years, and they are normally removed just as you have described. just wondering if there any little tricks specific to the escudo.

If it did not even click but worked after a tap I would say its the solenoid not the actual starter .
If it clicked but did not wind over until a tap then its probably the brushed in the motor .
If you can get it back together , get another solenoid . If not just get a second hand starter , they are dime a dozen .

Looks like there are 2 well worn brushed in there. Shoud be cheap enoiugh to replace. Auto parts store or auto sparky should have them.
But givin your symptoms I would say solenoid too. The one in my W/C truck does that after most good dunkings. Sealed unit that is not water tight and the contacts melt when you put power through them when they are wet. Last a while but get slowly worse.
