Aircon refrigerant?

I've had a bit of a search with no luck. Does anyone know what year the Terranos went from using R12 refrigerant to R134? I've got a 92 model (jap import) and I want to take the aircon system out for another car. I need to know if it is a) safe to remove the gas, or b) if I need to have it modified to take R134.
Cheers

You should have the gas professionally removed from your vehicle, where it can be transferred into a bottle safely. Can be very bad if you breathe it in.
Pretty sure they only use one type of gas now. More environmentally friendly or something so would need to get it changed for that.

Yeah it is illegal to knowingly discharge any refrigerant gas to atmosphere be it CFC or HCFC. It will need to be recovered to a bottle and sent for disposal.
The sytem will need to be converted to take R134a as R12 is no longer available.
If you're not sure about what you are doing then get some professional help as specialist equipment & knowledge is needed

easy way to tell is to look at the acsses ports, r12 which is the old gas which you are no longer used has an external thread on the two fittings.
r134a is the current gas we use, and has clip on/quick realese type accses ports. either way you do need some specilist gear to degas (legally degas anyway...)and regas.

THanks skidmark, sounds pretty easy.
I'll have a look tomorrow.
