Hi guys,

I have just brought a 2000 Double cab Hilux SR5. It has the 1KZ-TE and is my first 4X4. Before this I had a honda civic as it was cheap to run as a student.

Looking to join a club soon as I have zero 4X4 experience.

Below is my new truck (Hoping to had a few bits to it soon)

Haha that choppa thing is mint. Have been paid out with that before but is still bloody funny.

I have just finished uni and landed good job. I planned to save for one this year but this came up for a good price and couldn't let the deal go.

Im in Kohimaramara. I was looking at the Woodhill forest website, is that any good for someone starting out as I see there are numerous track difficulties and someone is available to tow if I get bogged down?

yea man its good as for learners, specially in the dry too. Easy as.

I would also suggest joining a club too. You get heaps of advice and get access to way more places too.

That is exactly what I thought. Stefan, follow Hilux Dan around there cause if there is any sticky out branches, he will stop, get out the loppers and clear the track for him and you

Haha so I take it a clean truck is as bad as a fresh pair of overalls? I have to get new guards and then can put mud flaps on then I'll be good to go can't wait.

Brought a set of sports bars and roof racks so can get some spotlights for a touch of night driving and fishing.

Hi guys,

Its just about time to get a warrant and my tyres aren't looking like they will pass.

I know this might stir the pot a little bit and have read the tyre forum and it has only confused me more.

Currently I have BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A's 31X10.5 15r's and am quite impressed how quiet they are on the road. I don't know how they go off road.

Replacement it is cheaper to get the Maxxis Bighorn, are theses a better tyre keeping in mind that I'm only starting and hoping to cover a range of terrain when the time comes. Are they nice and quiet?

Also will a wider tyre fit? Do they make them wider with those specs?

heres an observation for you.

the picture of the 1984-5 hilux at the top left of this page is running a firestone RMT retread pattern.

no good for wet grass or ashphalt tarseal or rocks.

Hi Stefan,
I don't blame you for getting confused with tire selection.
The better the tire for off-road, the worse they go on-road.

Crash bandicoot has a point (cryptic as it may be)
Ask around a few shops for the on/off road ratios and make your choice based on the results, and look at what you are going to use them for and the terrain.
The more aggressive the tread the better for the mud, but the trade off is traction on wet tarmac or digging holes in sand.
Anything more than AT's will make some noise on road.
When price is thrown into the equation, it becomes even more of a minefield
Maxxis are all good as a middle of the road choice.

Who is the supplier of Maxxis in auckland (or any other tyre dealers in AKL for that matter)? I might have to go to a few places and see what they have to say; especially regarding size etc. I might stick with what is on there, if they are not too outrageous in price, as they have less road hum than the directionals on my civic.

The tyre company (Mokoia road) in Birkenhead does maxxis,

also you could look at getting a set of off road tyres and a set of on road, though that is more expensive and you have to get another set of wheels too. However you save chewing out you off road tyres.

Yea i was seriously considering this option. It is more expensive initially but in the long run id say it will pay off.

Would it be possible to fit a wider tyre on the rims i have? they are currently 10.5 31 15's. Do they even make a tyre wider for this size?

maxxis middle of the road If i were you I'd check out nangkang mudstars - They are almost a clone of the maxxis buckshot but are farrr cheaper. They are a bit thin in the sidewal so can be staked a bit easier than some tyres but value for money its gotta stop with them.

As for road noise, wind up the windows/turn the radio up.

Ok so i still cant decide on tyres.

I was thinking about doing a 2" suspension lift. Correct me if im wrong, but this would mean that i can fit 32X11.5 tyres?

With that in mind, is there any point in spending the money to get slightly bigger tyres, or am I better off to buy a really good tyre instead.

I cant find what is involved in a suspension lift for an IFS Hilux, are there any places that do a complete kit?

Hi Stefan,

My friend has a similar model to you, and can fit 33" tyres but are on 15 x10.5 rims also the offset is quit deep, he also had to modify the front inner gaurds to accommodate them he also did a 50mm body lift, and I think he did a 2" suspencion lift as well.

as with IFS is to wind up your torsions, which is the only option for IFS, the back is no issue at all.

He has a dbl cab Hilux, so I think a slight differance in setup but I could be wrong.

Im sure the standard double cabs are slightly higher (or maybe everyone i see is lifted they always seem so much higher)

Thanks mate. I got to do a few bits a pieces before it is ready (mudflaps, snatch hook etc (might have to get a plate engineered because of my bullbars) But I am really stoaked about it as Ive been looking for one in this shape for a while now.

Ok I think I will stick with the same size tyres as I have heard that cranking up the torsion bars means I lose a bit of travel and its better to have more travel offroad, does that sound about right?

there a kits available for Hilux IFS I believe, so rather than winding your torsions up and losing out on flex you can get uprated ones and keep the flex and get the height.
