I've heard the water pumps need replacing early. The rear airbag system can leak.
But apart from that they are a good runner. Honda and BMW or VW having a hand in making them made a difference compared to the earlier ones. So I'm told.

I'm really impressed with how it handles on road. How smooth the drive train feels. It's very user friendly. I'm thinking, hmmm. Owning one of these for a few years could be nice.
I've got this one over night. I'm going to tow the boat with it later just to see how it feels and how much gas it drinks.

I heard every model of toyota needs its gearbox replaced, I heard all Nissans are prone to seatbelts failing.... Where do people hear these things??
They have the usual problems ANY brand has. One could be a lemon, the other wont have any issues for 200K+ kms. Never sold a rear airbag, have sold front airbags.
BMW had input so great powerplants

I call them an internet rig WWW (wannabe wanker wagon), I believe that they may do everything right etc, but that most people buy them 2nd hand so they say "I have a Range Rover (a bit like the JJJJaaaaaggg coment on TopGear). The guy who purchased it new for well over $100 K has the right to that, but they guy who gets it 2nd hand for $30k or so, doesn't.
These rigs are the Alfa of the 4WD community, massive depreciation is assured. If this is not an issue, then no sweat.
Just the way I see it any way.

I've driven around & been driven around in a 2004 one, seriously comfortable eh - most luxury cars arent even that comfortable to sit in...

Lets start the car bashing stories again
I know of a 03 v12 merc that developed a slight water leak , $10000+ to fix . Was cheaper to take out front suspension and sub frame to replace a small pipe than pull the engine . Luckily not mine .
Anyway for the coin you are getting a lot of car with the rover , will be far more comfortable to drive than a 100 series . If I could scrap together a little more coin I would be getting a diesel one just the same .

As another option Pete, as you are looking at Euro's etc, might be woth having a look at the Beamer. I can't comment on any of them from a driving or comfort side of things, but it might be worth you having a look.
I wasn't bagging the RR, more pointing out a perception (weather right or wrong) that people have. I used to have a brick sales rep who drove a $10k Alfa, and all of us guys on site gave him total shit about being a yutz. That is all the builders, who were in turn driving near new $35k + 4wd's. As NZer's unfortunatly the "tall poppy" bs is alive and well.
Good luck with your car shopping (and I know what a bitch it is when you think you have it under control and then you see something else and go hmmmmm..... might just give that a go)

For my money I would go Disco 3 or 4 with a TDV8.
Do these still have the leaky sunroofs?? My neighbour has one (about 99-01 model) and has to put rubbish bags around sunroof to keep the water out. Kinda spools the bling bling effect

hmmn, I dunno dude. Thats a wee bit weird.
beautiful car though!
I'd rock one but unfortunately
a, I can not afford to buy one, or the fuel to run it.
b, rather than everyone thinking i was successful they would instead think i was just driving my old folks wagon.
reminds me of this safari I used to see drive around Hamilton.
Pretty sure it said DIE YUPPIE SCUM on the window banner.

That banner would of been asking for it.
Hey, the reason I'd get all the windows tinted to the max is so no one will see me driving it.

No personalized wanky kws number plate going on this type of wagon. There are plenty of them around town for me to just blend in i recon.
That's the one thing I don't like when you drive these RR's. People think you got lots of money and are successful. I'm not successful. And I'm doing my best to spend what money I have.

Hi Pete,
As others have said you are getting a very nicely speced car with the Rangie but there is a very good reason all that Euro stuff is very cheap on the used car market. But you get a HUGE amount of car for the money bud.
So thats why you buy from a dealer if possible and get a 3 year warrenty with it and ull be sweet as, just make sure you up-grade to another wagon just before the warrenty expires.
Some of the later model Jeep V8 stuff is quiet nice and again can be had for quiet cheap on TM etc, and they dont tend to have as much electronics as the Rangies so a little less to go wrong in that area anyway.
Or you could go one the Lexus LX470 v8 Cruiser's but they are way more truck like than the rangies and i think once youv'e driven a Rangie you might struggle with the old toyota Truck.
Every brand has its problems that why i reakon just spend a little more and get a good Warrenty.

you do not have to go to a dealer to get a mechanical warranty. You can buy that warranty at any time from a number of places.

Do you know this for a fact Nathan.? this was the case years ago but its changed now as far as im aware. Warranty's normally can only be brought from the licenced dealer that sold the car and the car needs to be under a certain number of kms to apply, and the warrantys that cover the Euro stuff have even stricter guide lines and cost more etc.

http://yellow.co.nz/search/mechanical%2 ... bAoda1SvdwBuying from a yard for the warranty is a false economy. Their yard mark up covers not only their profit but also for them to pay a 3rd party for the warranty.
The yard does not care how much the warranty covers but only that you know you have one.
EG, We bought a honda off TM (cheap) for my x and bought mechanical insurance for it.
-I know a guy who purchased an RX8 from a yard with mechanical warranty. In the glove box was a pamflet from the insurer basically saying that rotarys are not covered. (iirc it was the AA they used)
(im trying to say that if you cant get a mechanical warranty yourself, the yard cant either)
