Hi all
I have a problem with my mum's Pajero. Its a gen II 2.8TD
We have had the rear main seal fixed a couple of m, months ago but now we have another oil leak. I know it isn't the engine oil as it isn't black and there is no sign of oil from the engine. Auto tans is fine too.
What seems to be leaking is the front drive shaft seal and the seal between the TC and the gear box.
Here are some photo's below to show here it is leaking from. In one you can see the grey seal has seemed to disappear. I am thinking it needs to be redone.
what are your thoughts guy's?

Hey Lincolin,
There are a couple of constants in this world.......gravity and fluid never flows up hill (unless it is flung)
Your pics show us where it is ending up, not the source
Keep looking up further. As I'm not familiar with Mitzy's it could be coming from anywhere higher up than where it is dripping off
Cheers,

It looks like it is coming out through were the bolts are as seeing on one of the photos there are drops of oil below them.
That could be a possibility, but dont take my word for it.
Having a closer look at the second pic the bolts look wet so Iam having a guess it is that, not to sure if that is possible
Cheers

P.S,
The grey seal is just oil resistant RTV sealant. The fact the bead is missing doesn't mean the seal is compromised
Good luck.
Best method of finding oil leaks is to clean it all first, then take for a run and observe. Use one of your Mum's old make-up compacts mirrors to see up on top. I'm thinking shift shaft seal, sender or wiring grommet.
Cheers,

I had an oil leak from the same area on my truck, The leak was from the front drive shaft and the oil was blowing all around the transfer case like on your photo's.
There is a plug on the drive shaft at the splines that go into the transfer case. The plug which is hidden by the U Joint comes loose and leaks oil.
I replaced my drive shaft with a spare that I had and it fixed the leak. We had a Triton that came into work which had the same problem so we got the plug and U Joint repaired by an engineer
Cheers Nick

Drench the area in Brake cleaner then run it for a bit and see where the new oil comes from.

Ok, I give it a clean when I can. But it does look like the front driveshaft.
Will let you know what happens
cheers

It will be one or both of two things. As nicinnz said, it can leak from the welch plug in behind the U Jiont, or its the seal on the transfer case output shaft.
I fixed a similar leak in my truck by dismantling the U joint, removing the welch plug (smacked it out down the hollow drive tube). Then used some of that two pot steel epoxy and glued a new welch plug in. You then put a good dent into the centre of the new welch plug to deform it and lock it into the hole. Leave it overnightfor the epoxy to harden and refit the u Joint.
I would also replace the output shaft seal at the same time.

Your Mum should replace the Mitsi and get something else, seems you have having heaps of problems with it.
