gq losing drive

Post by crazyclark31 »

was on a trip in wknd and at one of the hills one of the guys truck lost drive in low box.
Its a factory turbo auto think its a 96. Has had the trans rebuilt once and had the pan off since to try and sort issue. The belts are all as they should be(So the trans guy in cromwell says) and the bottom of the pan was clean as was the oil.
Its got an aftermaket cooler on it to

He hit the gas when on the hill after a failed attempt and the truck just sat there.Wasn't free reving and was in low low.
Has done it a few times but seems to be at radom.
Hill wasn't the steepest either. Maybe 15-20deg

Any ideas-help would be awsome as is driven guy nuts

cheers

May not be the correct answer but my auto Patrol did this to me and it was low on trans fluid. It was draining the torque converter dry which = slippage. haha did it in on my street when trying to drive into my driveway (not a steep street either). I had an aftermarket trans cooler as well. (I ended up putting just over 1L back into it).

Cheers

I'd be very careful as if it is a blockage causing the problem then there will be low oil pressure inside the auto. This is as bad to an auto as it is to an engine!

Also does the problem stop if you turn the motor off and then back on? If so could be blocked pick up and would most likely be caused by the torque converter failing.

I don't want to bag the auto guys that did the job but do you know what they did? Did they rebuild the entire auto and recon the torque convertor?

Also I've had a problem with a Safari auto where it wasn't selecting the gear correctly. In my case it was caused by a bent part inside the valve body that happened when I bent a chassis. What this felt like is very similar to what you discribe. It would feel like you were spinning the tyres as it had load on the engine but no drive to the tyres. In my case I had to hold the shifter slightly between gears to make it select the gear.

Cheers for that guys. will get in contact with the guy and pass the info on.
we checked and trans fluid was on the full mark.
Will check with him as to what kinda work the trans had done to it.
One thing we had thought it might be is its not dropping down into low when the lever is pulled back. It hasn't got a body lift.
Thanks for the help :)

just a thought. You are checking the fluid with the engine idling and trans in neutral?

auto trans MUST be checked with the engine running and in neutral, checking them with the engine off will give incorrect fluid level.

lol dont want to sound negative, but if your auto trans guy wasn't aware on how to check the fluid level on a Nissan, Id be looking for a new Trans shop.

For the nissan auto, get the trans warm ( drive for a few mins) shift it through all the gears with the engine still running, go from the fowards gears to netural and check by pulling dip stick, wiping and replacing then pulling and checking level. This needs to be done pretty quickly. If it was showing full on the dip stick with the engine off then it will be miles low.

So are you saying the auto won't manually select 1st gear with the shifter? If so then the shifter linkage needs adjusting and I'd say that is basically the problem. (and maybe fluid level)

Well checked the fliuld as told and it not that so will look into the linkage adjustment. Didn't know they were adjustable so yet again this old dog has learnt another new trick
Will get this sorted yet.

The auto shift lever on the side of the box will click into each position. Very important to get the shift right.
