Hi guys, new here. from chch and i myself have a 1990 ex5 prado(spring seats and sunroof), 35" simexs, lockers f+r, 2lt, nothing extreme but goes pretty well.

Lost all our shit in the earthquake so living down at wanaka at the moment and have started using the old mans vx landcruiser that just sits here. think it's like a 1990? 4.2 turbo, manual etc

Driving back to our place here the other night just from town (a few k's) pulled over, went to take off again and have just completely lost hi2.

in 1st gear with my foot fully off the clutch and there is just a pretty rough noise coming from the transfer case. put it in low 4, drives like a dream.

any idea what would cause us to lose hi2 just like that? had been driving it all week fine, even locked the diffs and went to low to get the boat off the beach and it was fine.

just odd that hi2 has dropped itself out of the blue?
any help would be great. thanks

Just to verify.....you say you lost H2. Is the vehicle part time 4WD with free wheeling hubs on the front?

im guessing that you have stripped the high range tranfur box gear as if what you are saying is correct with no problems with low range and nasty sounds when in high ciming from the trans box

drop the oil and inspect from metal parts. im picking that there will be lots

Most likely you have just stripped a front drive flange. If you are a full time 4wd truck which is more common, then the transfer case will be sending all it's power to the front diff and non driving axle.

How sure are you that it's transfer case noise? I could be wrong and it could be the transfer case.

Knock the covers off the front hubs and get someone to look at the end of the CV while you try and drive in 4 wheel hi.

Oh bugger. Just read you're subject again. You have a Hi 2 transfer case. You must have a part time 4WD.
