Kai-Iwi Beach

Post by philh »

A bit of advice for a newbie, I belive you can drive along the beach from Kai-Iwi back to Wanganui. A fairly basic drive I believe.

Anyone done it who can offer advice to an amateur - any catches, trip time, tide conditions (I believe there is one point near the Kai Iwi end that can only be got around at low tide - anyone know how low it has to be ?), things to watch for, where do you get on and off the beach ?

Thanks for your help,
Phil.

hi and welcome Philh
I havent done this trip for a number of years but from what I remeber , its a straight foward drive with no big surprises. The only part to watch for is at Kia Iwi beach around the head land and if starting from that end you can judge the tide easily , just go when its low. There is a stream crossing not far along the beach and is not a concern. The sand is normally hard but dont go off into the sand hills. Sometimes when conditions are right and there has been a strong wind there is at least two old ship wrecks under the sandhills to be seen. If the Wanganui river has been in flood I would not bother as the beach could have clutered up with drift wood which can make it impossible to pass. Watch for the exit into Casltecliffe ( my home town )
cheers DJ
