by the heater not workign do u mean it doesnt blow air or it doesnt blow heat?

if it doesnt blow air then yes they are connected, when u move your heater switch from blue stripe to red stripe it opens up a small valve located on the firewall letting engine water travel through a small radiator in under your dash

if your getting air and no heat your heater valve maybe seized, if you dont know where this is get a mate to move the heater switch from red to blue and back and foward till you see the wire and lever move on the valve , usually on the passengers side of the firewall

take both heater hoses off the engine and use your garden hose to run water through one of them with the heater tap open. If you don't get water flowing through then your heater core or pipes to it are most likely blocked, Also check the metal pipes on your engine that you take the heater hoses off aren't blocked, they can fill with rust if your engine hasn't had anti freeze

Try and get as much of that 'sludge' out as poss and unblock it. Its just a mini radiator (heater core or radiator core) in there and can/will start to leak.

I had to replace one in my 01 hilux late last year, leaks radiator fluid all over passenger side foot well. wasn't hard to repair apart from the steap price for a new one that had to be imported from ausie.

If you do need to replace it, you have to take the dash out and keep disassembling it until you can get the heater ducting and eventually the heater box out (cable from red/blue heater switch leads to it) and pull it out from there. I had to take my WHOLE dash out - was a b1tch.
