Alrite, my first truck (toyota hilux surf with 1KZ) 2nd truck (71series with 1KZ) both have identical problems with starter motors giving up out of nowhere.
Anyone else have problems with these starter motors??
yes their starter motors are right underneath the oil filter and fuel filter, and that can cause problems while donig oil/fuel filter changes, but i cover the starter motor.
Im wandering if it has to do with the river trips i do 1-2 times a week?
Are these not the best starter motors to be using if you do alot of water trips? or is there a way of fully water proofing them

Im guessing that when you do an oil change when you unscrew the filter oil leaks out & dribles down the side of the block ...you can fit a tube to the bottom of the "cup" below the filter ...then you can direct it to go into a bucket etc.
What exactly is going wrong with ya starter....often the contacts just wearout ...its a simple & cheap repair...cost me about $13 a cpl yrs ago to replace them .

Doubt it’s got anything to do with the oil drain. You should already have a small hose coming off the bottom of the filter cup drain.
Motor will be oil proof from drips anyways.

It will be Contacts, as TS says.
Yes they're cheap but a bit of a pain to get the starter motor out.
Not that hard though.

When I did mine I removed the breather from the s motor and tapped both housings of the starter motor for 1/4 BSP threads. I have then put some hose connectors into these and connected with a tee piece back to the top of firewall level with hose, as another breather.
Had no more problems in the 100,000 km's I've done since then.

From memory I also turned the armature and put new brushes in as well.

Cheers
John

It'll be the contacts. The only problem I ever had with my 1KZ was the starter motor, ended up carrying a spare after it played silly buggers on the top of old man range.
