Hey folks,
I recent was asked how I manualized the electronically controlled auto in my Prado 1UZ conversion.

So I thought I'd do a how to on the subject.

1st i will lay down some facts,



This is a diagram of which solenoids are active during which gears.
this was lifted from the manual for my auto MK4 supra which is operated the same as most 4x4 auto's



This is the diagram of the shift selector switch on the trans,
I used this switch to operate the solenoids to get the gear i wanted.

At this point i need to draw a diagram so I'll leave these diagrams with you all to absorb whilst i fight with a drawing program.

If someone has seen a write up on this very subject then please feel free to speak up.

ok, the idea is to feed power to pin 4 in the diagram below,
this in turn will be directed out of:

pin 9 D
pin 2 2
pin 3 L

I have noticed some variation in switch shape and configuration but they all will have these outputs,
they just may be in a different place and may not have wires in the plug itself.



The feed from "D" will be directed through your OD Off switch on the gear stick then to solenoid 2
(the OD switch wiring will need to be modified as it is an earthing
switch normally)

The feed from "2" will go to 2 diodes then connect to both solenoids.

the purpose of these diode's is to stop power back feeding through the "2"
circuit when the other gear positions are selected.

The feed from "L" will go directly to Solenoid 1



here is a rough schematic diagram for those who like Schematics (i do)


The 3 wires the operate the 3 solenoids (1,2 and lockup)
can be different colors so you will need to find out what they are for your particular trans.

I had the Lockup solenoid wired to the MANU switch in my hilux,
it made a difference as the torque converter was a bit slushy,
but must only be used for cruse/low load situation and must be disengaged when shifting gears,
otherwise you will soon overheat your trans and find the oil full of glitter (for those who like glitter, disregard this)

The 1UZ converter i have in my prado has a lower stall rpm so doesnt realy make much difference.

one more thing to note,
I have on my prado used relays to power the solenoids.
I tested the resistance of the switch and found it less than
ideal so figured relays would be best.

The other selector pins to wire up are 6 and 5.
these you will wire to the starter inhibitor circuit.

and then there's the reverse light pin.
wire that up to a large fog horn/flashing hazard light on the roof of your vehicle,
and if you can, one of those talking reverse beepers.


this how to is not my finest work but i hope its helps some ppl who
have been in the dark.

Ideally this system is used for those who have changed the engine ECU
or the engine to a non ECU type,
and it no longer will control the trans.
