Iam also wanting to go up there but I dont know where any of the tracks are but I do know some people that do.

not to sure about a permit, but I do think you need to talk to the owners that track boards too, well that is from what I know anyway.

It is always good to find a club to go and join, this way you can find other places to go other than (Woodhill)

Iam keen to do this sometime.

Cheers.

I went through there on a quad before I got into 4wdin, mean as.
Some places you're not supposed to be, but I went with some locals that knew their way around the gates.
The waterfall track is awesome.
I might do some ground work and hook up with a few locals to get the haps 8)
Will post on this thread if there is any developments.
Cheers,

There are a couple of good tracks out there but to not have to turn around and go back through you've gotta go over private land. I think the jeep club do it every new years, went with them once in big_al's zuk, lots of sticky deep holes.
Hope you have a good winch

I think you are confused :? with another post which was a track down in the South Island which needed a chainsaw.

to get photo's up you need to use photobucket/ Image shack and use the IMG code to paste it on this web site, as for your Info go to your private message link top right hand corner and click on profile and you can edit info there.

You need to upload your photo's to what either you use as above which I forgot to mention and scale down the picture to 800x600 so it wont say photo is to big to display.

the mechanic up the road said that most of the stuff in dome valley is crazy especially in the winter with large deep bog holes. it came up after i asked because lincoln mentioned it after our unformed road recce.
he showed me photos and even with 4 or 5 well set up truck and 4 winches they ended up leaving 3 of them in there due to breakages ect... they all seem to be pretty serious guys who know what theyre doing... things may have improved but from what hes said you need a few well set up, reliable trucks. each with its own winch bitch as he said you spend most of the day winching, one truck pushing through the mud and the others following. very few places to pass...

this is all from what he said and the photos he showed me. would be keen to come but defiantly as a passenger/winch bitch

cheers

Ha Ha,
Last time I went there, we were building bridges and that was the weekend after a local 4wd nut (with earth moving equipment) spent a week in there with a medium digger
Not for the faint hearted.
Will have to make contact with the locals to see how things are.

Theres a short track off Conicle peak rd ,its a there and back deal ,unless you want to deal with the mad woman at the end only a couple of Ks but be prepared for panel damage and if your running an electric winch take a spare alt and battery ,In the wet its anywhere between 4hrs and an overnighter depending how well prepared and set up you are ,last time i went through was last winter and we were winching through water/mud holes that i had to close windows as it was part way up the windscreen depth wise at times. Its not a shiney trip

Yep know what thats like ,one time we went in there were 2 well set up winch challenge trucks and a 2 stroke suzuki with a 9000 lb winch, after about 6 hrs we were still only 2/3rds the way ,1 truck blown hyd winch and his back uo elec winch dead ,the other dead batteries ,was a long day.the only truck that gave no problem was the little zuk ,he winched just about the whole track ,quite funny really what with it being a 2 stroke it sounded like someome with a bloody chainsaw chasing us all day

the waterfall loop was ok the last time I was up there (just after the last big storm a couple of months back)
some of the bog holes on the loop by Hudson lane are getting a little on the deep side after one of the boys dug them out with his 35's
the breadcrate bridge could use some work
I think the forest owners are planning to harvest the hudson lane area as they put in a new gate that you drive around easily :?

I was in the 2 or 3 years ago with 5 or 6 serious bush trucks. after 3 hours we needed to winch the last truck backwards and we were able to use the winch on my tow vehicle, which was still parked in the car park!!! hadn't had any breakdowns, just very slow going. it was a case of drop into a bug hole full of "sludge", winch truck and about 2 ton of sludge out the other side. as soon as the truck was out of the hole, the sludge ran back into the hole so that the next truck had to move the same sludge again. this went on and on for the entire track. then we had to turn around and repeat the whole excersize on the way back out to the road. would have been far faster, and a lot less effort to just walk the track.

I went for a walk at the Matakana end of The Dome track today, looks like some good tracks up there but they haven't been used for what looks like at least a year. I might take my mountain bike up next time so I can cover more ground.
