changing gen2 auto to manual help

ok finally got to do some off roading with my truck.
good trip apart from big decents down hills. as being a auto you really do pick up quite a bit of speed with the auto before you get any engine braking. ( tourque converter finally grabing )
yes i can use the brakes but bit hard on them and would hate to think what a really muddy down hill would be like.
so thinking manual conversion tho seems expensive with all the gear i will need.
truck is running 2,8td with 33s and 4.9 diff ratios.
would hate to think what 35s would be like
failing the manual swap has anyone tried to put in a stall switch on the conveter? have been told you can do this with some toyotas.
any help or advise would be great
cheers
