Brakes

have less than adequate brakes for awhile now, last wof brakes were rated at 52%, so going into a brake only place thurday to get it sorted , they are not the system i want when is turboed up

Did you see that brake upgrade that are working on on the patrol forum (man thats like 3 posts in a row mentioning that site

)
Bolt on but only if you have 16" rims. Think they are just at the stage where they can give a price for kit.
Might be a bit overkill considering you don't do much towing and its a SWB, but it sounds the business.
Shorter life/performance brake pads could be a realistic bet.

yes read them, but the service garage aren't up to it, so will see what they think thursday,

would be easy to source the skyline gtst callipars. But as you said a bit overkill. Safari brakes are fine with 35s if they are working well.
Coxsy are you upgrading or servicing?

what ever it requires, slow speed below average , tonight traffic stopped pedal to the floor, but it stopped, its not a nice feeling,I've had better and want it back

Had similar problems with mine,swb on 35's. After replacing or rekitting master cylinder & calipers found the main problem was the flexible hoses that go to the calipers, 1 front & 1 back had very small leaks, hard to spot, replaced them & brakes are excellent now.

So just read through what they are doing with that brake upgrade. It would appear that the biggest improvement is from the increase disc size and the caliper change isn't really doing much but being low profile helps.
Note that if they fit the GQ single pots to the rear they have to change the bias. This means the piston area of the four pots is very simlar to the single pot GQ brakes so force applied is about the same.
So the upgrade will be good but don't think fitting the same caliper to a standard diameter disc will do anywhere near the same thing!
However there are big 4 pot calipers available that can be made fit a GQ disc and will increase braking. Won't help fade as the disc is too small for the size of the truck really.
Hate to say it but you gotta love Toyota's for brake sellection!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

read posts here all the time from folks trying to pass cert test with brakes
they all fail
then they go and fit a second booster (VH44) and hello, thier truck stops
worth a look

brake pads not contacting on the discs properly, funny no icon for bumping your head againest a brick wall.

Has anyone else experienced the choice safari feature that when the pads wear too low they fall out of the caliper? This is not a nice feeling with an hours drive to work at 4am lol. Thank god it was 4am and no traffic

just got a WOF on mine ..
Brakes at 62% on Wof Sheet
handbrake, Stall test (the hand brake on the Saf is bloody excellent funnily enough, it WILL stall the truck even in 1st low)
62% and thats with less than 2 week old pads, and all 4 calipers stripped, inspected and cleaned.
mine stops fine but the pedal feels a little "light" (as the WOF guy termed it) not quite spongy just light. WOF guy spent a good ten minutes driving backwards and forwards, turning motor on and off testing the brakes obviously looking for an vacuum or fluid leak.
main difference was the old pads where Metal Kings and the new ones where just standard Safari ones.

I had that happen to me when on a trip thru Pureroa, lost all pressure but no fluid, had a new master cylinder, nobody could work it out, luckily was on a trailer so got home ok,then found 1 front right pad missing! Awesome Nissan feature!

Had it happen twice now. Moral of the story is to not be a tight cnut and buy decent pads with lots of backing plate on them. And ya know what???? They seem to last a hell of alot longer and don't fade.........

We have just done that with a GQ. Fitted a second GQ vacum reserviour and it made a massive difference to the brakes! Everything else is standard to. (brakes that is not the truck)
I haven't tested it but i have a feeling that the factory vac pump wouldn't have the capacity to recover fully in the time required for a multiple stop brake test. The other thing that makes me suspect this is that my old truck with a VH45 in it had very good brakes and they were standard. Sure the truck was very light at around 2000kgs but it did run 35 Simexs and stopped better than my other GQ which had 32's but was deisel.
