Plasma Cutter Info

Post by lilpigzuk »

Looking at getting a plasma cutter. Got a project on the go and this would make life a hell of a lot easier (mounts to cut off chassis, as well as panel cutting etc etc) and from what I have read, this would make for cleaner cuts and not so much wasted metal from the likes of using a grinder.
Anyone got thoughts on what to look for/look out for, brands to stay away from etc??

cheers

Take the cut thickness specs with a grain of salt. Plasma cutters are very slow & finicky when operating at the top of their range so get one that claims to cut 2-4mm more than you need.

If it breaks, build it stronger.
If it doesn't break, drive it harder.

8) Nice the one toy I can't justify.... yet

Clint's got it right especially with the cheaper ones  the other thing is I found they didn't like dealing to rust or trail "crap"

I've decided to stick with my gas axe for a while, with a few tricks you can get almost as nice'a cuts and its there for heating as well :D

And have a good supply of clean dry compressed air, may mean fitting a dry filter to your existing compressor, the liners don't like any sort of moisture and it's frustrating having the jet cutout 'cos your compressor can't keep up. And get yourself plenty of spare tips and electrodes, it's a shit to get blow back and burn the last spare tip on a saturday arvo with no shops open 'till monday. There's alot to be said for a good grinder with a thin cut-off wheel, and you'd want to grind the top off the plasma cuts anyway before you weld to it, dirty oxidised steel makes for a nice brittle weld. As for brands just stick to those that have a history in tools in general, ie: stay away from a cheap Shanghai Shitter. Miller make a good "shed" model.

Miller is one of the best companys for welding machines along with lincoln...

Will try that thanks, hard work trying to find anyone that hires them out, but I guess with the consumables they use it isnt really worth it..
