A year ago I sold my sas surf to invest the money from it and a lot more money into what is most peoples biggest asset "the home" 20grand+ spent and many hard hours of grafting and Sept 4th quake has written it off, so 7months with nothing to do at home and fishing isn't that exciting........may as well go back to 4-wheeling
So decided if I was going to get back into 4x4 I wanted something that goes hard, well built, is SAFE (as can be ) and I don't need the hassles of a road legal vehicle.
One thing that bothers me is I haven't built it myself...but I just don't need the hassle of a truck build and a house build at the same time
So a 2day 1 night roadtrip from Christchurch to Palmy north and back to Christchurch, I picked up this (and trailer) which will get a few further mods eventually on this thread, firstly tho I'll have some FUN and get used to it

Intended use:
Favourite stomping gound...West coast area, from haast to Seddonville, the odd event like Sheffield, pucker park, etc.
Maybe the odd Canty spot like Worsleys.
Intended mods;
It needs a winch, II alrerady have a Warn 9000lb low mount virtually brand new, looking at either front mount or mid mount.
Future mods, Coilovers, 4.7 gears, and anything else i find needs altering

Think you'll like the specs Grant,
Chipped 5l injected Commodore (rebuilt) mounted as far back as poss front of engine nearly in line with front axle, baffled rear sump, TH400 B&M shifter,
trussed and strengthened front housing, wide hubs, lockright and 30 spline longfileds (inc longfield hub gears), SNR hi steer, IFS p/s box, 3 link front end.
4 link trinangulated rear end, wide axle, discs, LSD (will replace with lockright), 4.8 R&P's, Chassis fully strengthened, braced and gussetted, All other heavy bits (Radiator, surge tank, battery, spare have been mid mounted, tripple trans coolers (one in radiator), headers, 3inch exhaust out passengers side, 36inch ET's on beadlocks, Real strong EXO which is fully gussetted..... lots of other nifty little mods as well such as ecu in glovebox.
The pic is the only one I have, (was taken by owner), got it home last night put to bed in garage will get some more pics soon.
Good flex but could be vastly impoved with coilovers.

Richard does have that opinion I know to well , but it's not for him it's for me
Time will tell how well it goes, the engineer who built it certainly thinks getting the weight centralised is a large factor in how it performs, enough to chop out the firewall out to mount the motor back a bit and move all the other stuff to the rear.
I look forward to a few trips out with all you guys again it's gonna be a blast, and i'm sure a xmas trip with Bulletproof again is top on the list

Why change the R&Ps to 4.7s if it already has 4.88's?

I should have been a bit clearer on that one we have some great dry rocky spots in Canterbury (and on the West coast Sth Is) and transfer reduction gears make them more fun and easier to negotiate, that's what I'd referred to at 4.7's
a few companies do them in the states for Toyota T/C's........

Ahhh... that makes more sense.

I'm running 5.29s in the diffs but with 40" rubber my 1st low is still higher than it used to be and far from a crawling low range...

hell yeah, a trip to Westport, some 4-wheelin with you guys sounds the shiz, would be really good to get out withflag, Jafa, and the Delis Twins.....I'm sure Nuts will be involved as well

Well 1st modification is on the bench, I've got a virtually brand new Warn XD9000 winch off a 2010 Ford Ranger 'quake victim'.......yes I f'n paid for it
The question is do I bother mucking around with a mid mount set up so I can winch forward or backwards....... or just mount it up front
If I mount it up front it will still fit well back in the engine bay where the radiator was, I think it'll fine there........at least for now
Who i'd really like an opinion from is someone who has dabbled with a mid mount, and has some advice on them, i've had several mounted up front and well rehearsed with one there

we need more pic's. the motor poked thru the fire wall may be partially due too the x/over steering. on mine commyv6 too pass steering I had 2 choices, lift engine up=bad or shove it thru the fire wall and get a weight balance bonus. everthing else is on the back too including winch. tool box in the front where the winch should be. winch was on the back prior to v6. more work mid mountig but worth it, mainly for the rope auto spooling. pulling back wards is rarely needed as going out alone dosnt really happen as its more fun with mates. havnt used it other than too try it out. that truck is so severely messed with why compromise now. so put it on the back. Im a little concerned i am geting too much weight on the backnow but I havnt shortened my wheel base. you should be ok because your short and have a huge chunk of cast iron in the front/middle. I semi agree with richard with on the v8 in front of diff and a shortened wieghtless rear end. Im sure you wont have that problem. me either. but I still have my long wheel base. climbs really well
