What alarm would you recomend

Got to fit an alarm to my surf.

What would you recomend ??

also self install or Pro ??

i have had three unden alarms ( 5 star ones) they are a bit more expensive but i have never had any problems :lol:

. and they have saved me a couple of times. my mate has fusion alarm and has troubles with the remote, but this could be just him :?:

i used to sell and install both uniden and fusion alarms.. fusion usually where easier to install. and i never had problems with eaither. they didnt do one that insurance companies would give discounts for though as they did not have a full black wired one..

go with a top end uniden one, or a mongoose..

if budget is the key.. i bought 2 off trade me for 60 each and actually turned out to be the easiest ive ever installed.. it has a couple of bugs, as the manual is crappy converted chinese to english.. but its the mrs car so its ok..

Arn't Uniden and Mongoose built by the same company? Just that Uniden are the budget version, bit like Lexus and Toyota?

I HAD a 5 star Dynatron in my old car, it was supose to be the one to get, car still got stolen though.

If they want it bad enough they will find a way.

I`m with suprasurf, the pitbull Alarm is by far the most effective :twisted:

Just go for a kill switch in a tricky place - will stop them taking the wagon at least and is cheap.

My preference would have to be uniden or mongoose. I have a uniden VS1600 myself (another trademe bargain). Couple of points that I can think of which might be useful to know:

* Get one with immobiliser(s) so at least they can't pinch the whole car (within reason)
* Most insurance companies prefer 4 star or above.
* Im not sure about other companies but with FMG I had to provide a document to prove that it was installed by a professional.

its strange that you say that fmg were difficult.. i am also with them.. didnt have any problems, i guess as i am a uniden certed installer

Just a note to those of you who have a Uniden VS2600XR alarm in your 4x4 or are thinking of getting one.

I have had one of these units and it has now been back to the installer 3 times now because of a fault in the backup siren module. Kept intermittantly alarming itself.
The first two times were suposedly due to moisture ingress causing corrosion.
The last time was because of who knows what, but off roading was blamed. I have only done three trips since the last repair, Ashley River trip, the training day here in Chch and corresponding river excursion and a Sunday drive into Lees Valley for a social outing. Hardly the stuff of serious off roading me thinks.

Uniden Auckland are now claming that these units are not designed for off road vehicles, something about submerging of the siren and the vibrations due to off roading, and will no longer cover this unit under warranty.

This in my opinion sucks :!:

So my delema now is I have a good alarm that had no warranty left on it.
It's only a year old.

I have now been given back the suspect siren unit and a new one, will install it myself as there is only 3 wires to re-connect. I can do that!.

But what I will also tackle is removing the electronics from within the siren itself; circuit board, key switch and battery and place them in a seperate case under the dash. Then it is a simple matter of running 2 wires back to the siren in the engine bay. :wink:

BTW for those who are thinking of possible reasons for the faults, the unit is mounted at the top of the firewall and facing down.
I do however think there is fault with the design as far as the key switch is concerned as it only has a simple rubber boot covering it. I suspect that was the reason it played up last time, but Uniden failed to return the unit to me after I had to purchase a new one.

Scuse me for ranting on, but im pissed off at the mo.

ok. little note. I used to be an installer.. i also used to tell funny tales of why things were broken.. WATER INGRESS etc..

i started installing the complete alarm high under the dash. I also installed the siren under there as well..

I spoke to many customers and asked them about it and they agreed that i siren going inside the vehicle is going to be more annoying to a theif than outside.

Move your new unit inside your cab. see if that helps..

I have never really found too many manufacture faults with uniden.. but that was 3 years ago..

Cheers Callum, I am going to put the old siren back on the firewall and the new unit under the dash. Just a simple case of doubling up the pezieo sirens.
Twice the noise me thinks.

Go for a 4 or 5 star dynatron, I have had cheaper ones which gave off false alarms etc, the Dynatron one is modular eg you can add on remote start, I have a turbo timer chip on mine...not all that keen on the uniden or mongoose
