trouble with 33's!!
trouble with 33's!!
i have just fitted some 33' tyres to my landcruiser and a few problems have popped up. was wondering if people could tell me what is normal and what isnt.
first when i hit a grate or something in the road the steering shakes from side to side for a while after.
brakes shudder at low speeds
and steering is alot more loose than before

Re: trouble with 33's!!
Are they balanced? Are they on different rims than you had on before?
Didn't barbie drive a jeep??
Re: trouble with 33's!!
There is a lot of rubber in a 33..especially if wide, and old tyres were a 31x10.5......
My 33x12.5x15's used to shimmy....
Balancing helped.
Also having correct caster.
Also what pressure are you running and what size rims.
As if the rim is narrow, it will feel more wobbly.
Tyre tends to balloon out.
Noticed that when I moved from 7 inch wide rims to 8...
Also the brakes will work harder to stop em... again more rubber..

Re: trouble with 33's!!

I have always found 33 or above that more psi helps

Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level then beat you with experiance!
Re: trouble with 33's!!
all the rims are balanced and the tyres are 33x13.5 mudzillas on 16x8 rims
could it be needing a wheel alignment or new steering dampner, i think it still has the factory one

Im running 33 12.5 15 on my hilux, I keep my tyres when driving on roads at about 35 psi, if below 25 it wallows on the road....
Other wise a wheel allignment and balancing should help....

Re: trouble with 33's!!
a wheel alignment and steering damper (if the current one is shagged) will help but at the end of the day a 13.5 wide mudzilla is hardly the best road tyre (especially compared to a 31 x 10.5 at or something) so don't expect them to dive the same way

Re: trouble with 33's!!
well my main worry at the moment is the shaking after hitting pot holes ect. it feels like a car does with bad wheel alignment but the shaking stops after 5-10 seconds

Re: trouble with 33's!!
one thing i've found on cruisers at wheel alignment time is on the hub there are 4 bolts that hold steering arm on hub that tie rod attaches to can get loose which can cause steering wheel to go from side to side. check the 4 bolts may help
needs more curry

Re: trouble with 33's!!
The shaking you will be experiencing at low speeds is just the Mudzillas and their type of tread, when I first got my set I thought there was something wrong and it was just the aggressive tread making the vibe/noise.
Possibly a need to get them rebalanced or it could be the fact that they are heavier than what you have had on and could just be a type of shimmy you are getting until the tyre settles back. Are you feeling it in the steering wheel mostly? Do you have a steering damper?

as stated previously it has a steering dampner but it is most likley the factory one so id almost guarantee its shagged and when i hit something the steering wheel shakes atleast 90 degrees from side to side

Re: trouble with 33's!!
when it shakes side to side 90 degrees are you all over the road or is it mostly stearing wheel play? If a cruiser steering box is the same as a hilux box (same design) then it should have a screw to remove some of the play from the steering

Re: trouble with 33's!!
it shakes in the same way that a car with poor wheel alignment shakes as it goes down the road, mostly just the steering wheel moving. and it did not do this on the old 31's
Re: trouble with 33's!!
I had 33" mudzillas on 15x8"s on my old 40 an apart from the road noise they were fine on the road, no vibrations at all up to 110 (wouldnt go any faster) mine were balanced but didnt need much weight. Maybe they need to be rebalanced properly??

Where they Mudzillas aswell?jakwoo39 wrote: and it did not do this on the old 31's

Re: trouble with 33's!!
I tried a mates 33 mudzillas on my surf ( was previously running bighorns) mudzillas were crazy on the road, felt like my truck was gonna fall to bits! But on his truck(isuzu bighorn) they felt okay on the road.
. Maybe something to do with the amount of weight over the front wheels? Surf seemed to be quite a bit heavier in the front end, maybe another factor to think about? I always run a bit more pressure in my front because of the weight difference.
Im talking about totally different vehicles but may also be a factor to think about.

Re: trouble with 33's!!
poor alignment doesn't cause steering wheel to shake, shaking is caused by out of balance tyre, rim is buckled or tyre is miss shapen or suspension or steering components are worn
