Low Range Selection

Hi, I got back from Mexico on Saturday and went out offroading on Sunday. The old girl was not too keen on going into low range. No problem moving the lever but there were some crunching noises when trying to engage low range and diff lock. Once into gear it kept jumping out and I had to hold the lever over for a while for it to stay in. It's a 1988 Range Rover Classic with the LT230 transfer case and a ZF4HP22 automatic box which was in neutral and the vehicle was stationary. Can anyone offer any advice on what the problem could be?

Well I found the problem with my transfer case. After losing everything last week (whilst being parked up outside my daughter school after picking her up   ) it jumped out of gear and was stuck in neutral I was moving the selector lever and nothing was hapening it just kept springing back to neutral and even if I held it over the engine just made lots of V8 noise and nothing happened :( so I feared the worst   .

I was just pondering the task ahead in removing my transfer case when I thought best check the linkages first. I couldn't see hi/low linkages from underneath but the diff lock linkages were working fine. I removed all the gubins off the transmission tunnel and on peering in through the hole for the TC selector lever I could see clearly the linkage had broken. The bracket arrowed below in yellow had sheared off near the top. I managed to remove it through the hole and welded it up and put it back. Good as new thank god it was an easy fix and cost nothing

Sometimes you just get lucky

I've just noticed that both engine mounts on Mudhog are stuffed, it looks like the motor is sitting alittle lower than normal

I had to fix one on Roary before I sold him which made me check Mudhog. It's not like I drive Mudhog hard

I've had starter motor problems and decided to strip it down and clean it out after the little bit of water I've been in lately.

All was going well until I went to refit it and snapped the black plastic terminal housing on the solenoid in two  . It had been cracked and shorting out causing my problems. The motor did have plenty of mud in it and now I know how to strip it for next time. Picked up a new solenoid and fitted it and everything is working and Mudhog is starting first time again :D

I saw the broken engine mount on the 3rd fitting of the starter motor!!

Fixed the reversing switch that was not working, which is fitted to the gearbox after helping out at Woodhill the other weekend and having to do a sweep of the park at 5:30 at night and not being able to see anything when backing up in the forest.

I had a spare switch sitting in my old gearbox, once I tested it and new it worked it was an easy swap, sometimes you just get lucky!! :D

Cheers
Brett
