Rebuilding tarrano manual box.

Picked up a manual terrano box for $141. Came with alot of other bits(doors, spare wheel carrier, tow bar, 4 standard rims, interior bits, All for sale if anyone needs anything)

Box needs new bearings, Seen on trademe a H/D kit for $270, that seems to be a pretty good deal. Talked to my old engineering teacher and he said best thing to do is get a terrano gearbox repair manual, Does anyone have one they would sell? or lend? or know were to buy?

Dont have a manual but is you search the net you will quickly find the nissan box model numbers. Nissan are good at putting the same RWD boxes in all sorts of cars including many the boy racers play with (all be it with different bellhousing and tail shafts)

Google the box model number and find out what cars they went in then search the ricer forums.

I found a 900+ page manual for the nissan car my doner engine/box came from complete with rebuild specs for the box.

Had a read up. Seems like he got it all sorted with no bearing pullers! Doing manual tranmissions at SIT in a couple of weeks, maybe we could dismantle mine for an example. Have to ask the tutor see what he thinks about that.

Roller bearings? I dont know much about bearings, Are the normal bearings just floats?

Normal ones are ball race type, rollers have a far greater surface contact and can be got in the same dimensions as the ball bearings.
Pays to overfill the box too.
On that thread is a strange bit of info, transfer takes ATF not gearlube. By the way I have used a real exotic type of gear oil in mine and it has hushed up all the strange noises.
Any more questions, fire away or start a thread so others can find it easy on a search

Have fun they are pretty easy to work on, make sure you don't let the syncro inserts flick out.

Read the notes posted in the thread Sibainmud posted and have fun. Mine feels like its about to shit it self again (Mind you done 50,000kms of mostly towing a big ass trailer and 4x4ing so not to bad) Pretty sure it has damaged the key ways on the countershaft again so Im going to rough style it and weld them up this time, shit design.

Cheers,

Yeah, I was always told to never tow in 5th or load it up very much as the countershaft shyts itself
Taking this advice on has made my box last real good considering the abuse I give it

Alright im gonna go get one of those haynes manuals. Repco best place for that?
Also, I just got the box from some fella who said bearings are buggered. My old teacher said you can chuck drill on input shaft and go through the gears to see what its like, should they all drive, but just noisy if it is bearings?
And that thread you posted Simon, he didnt seem to need any bearing pullers, just a press? at SIT they have a small press, should it be suitable?

Also, just found another kit for $196. Dont think its H/D bearings, Is it worth another $70 for H/D?

have fun. :D
all i used was the diagram off the ca18 gearbox
and seemed to get everything back together fine.
don't pull the synchromesh units apart, parts fly everywhere. and remember how all the dentent balls go(what hold the gear in gear)
also what i stuffed up on my box was as the bearings were gone 4 a few 1000kms 2nd and 3rd synchromesh unit was stuffed so i had 2 double clutch into second all the time otherwise it would crunch.
and to make things better i just blew 5th gear in my box so the rebuild begins for me aswell :?

Have a look on the net and see if the Nissan Silvia s13 manual boxes are the same as the terrano one (the autos are and I'm 90% the manuals are too) If it is flick me a line, as I have a 900pg PDF for the silvia that has a hundred or so pages of Manual box rebuild, tolerance, specs in it. Will sort getting you a copy of it if it will work.

I doubt it, more like a service manual. I had one of those once, but it didn't list my dash model truck. :?

Ive used the V6 manual i have here to repair my TD2.7 many times
.
Sure the ratios may be different but i think the caseings are the same so when i go to rebuild my 5 speed i will use the V6 exploded views to do it.

Started taking apart on friday, took transfer case off, unbolted bellhousing, tried pulling apart but only goes so far until the selector bit hits against the box, think I'll need a book before going any further.

R32 skylines run the same gearbox,I sold my old terrano gearbox to a Race cardriver who needed a spare for his 400hp skyline.

Never thought they were that good of a gbox being weak in 5th and 3rd but guess Im wrong
