Sick of it....time for options
Gidday,
I brought this a uteback 1990 safari a little while back, and have had a few issues with it.
The latest that is a repeat issue is the engine has an after market turbo on it, and aftermarket manifild etc. It is a home made exhaust manifold made form a coby exhaust. It warps badly every 1000kms, the exhaust develops a leak, and the truck starts sounding like a tractor.
I have had it machined twice already, and the prob has happened again in the last few days.
I am seriously thinking of doing a transplant with this
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =380017532
And doing all the other mods that I want to do to the suspension and body at the same time.
What probls can I realistically expect during this process? Has anyone done it?
My other option is buying this.....
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =379207616
And ute backing it...as the ute back suits my needs perfectly for work.

Re: Sick of it....time for options
why not just fix he problem by procuring a good quality manifold for it?
if not, giz the whole truck to me for real cheap

Re: Sick of it....time for options
HI Cameron,
I had thought of that........and will consider that option if this is going to prove to be a real headache......but i like the idea of more power with the v8. To be honest I thought the turboed 4.2 would have more stomp and tow power.....than it does.

i'm another vote for fixin the original and only real problem i'm hearin... fix the exhaust..
get a decent one made from a reputable exhaust outfit down there and get an egt temp probe put in there.. then you can see what the engines doin too.. (if ya dont have one already of course)
then ya can see about the tuning and set up of the thing.

Re: Sick of it....time for options
I'd be wary of the v8 shorty. 5" lift plus 2 body is a lot in a swb, the radius arms are on a big angle (would be better running drop boxes to level arms instead of cheap plates), no mention of rear arm mods for the lift, no cert, rust.
It either doesn't flex, or would get guard rub.
Looks like a half ar$e job to me, but could be wrong, just not many mods mentioned for running that size lift
The VH transplant would be costly I would think, I'd stick with what ya got, and get it running right. Easy enough to get a proper manifold etc for it.
If you sell, post some pics, know a couple of guys that would be keen.....

Re: Sick of it....time for options
Ok...I am hearing what you guys are saying.....is there anyone in particular that would be the rigth crowd to do this...Midas maybe? or someone else?
Re: Sick of it....time for options
You can buy manifolds off TM, get quotes on the exhaust from local shops, and go from there (may need turbo to suit too)
Re: Sick of it....time for options
buy a manifold, make sure it suits your turbo. whack it on, mod shit to suit? midas would be only trusted to mod your dump pipe and exhaust if required and you can't do it yourself. the rest, pending mechanical ability or an apititude to learn as you go = DIY?
edit: beaten.
FWIW i saw this a whie back.
easy/cheap way of getting a high mount turbo setup?
seems to work, too.

Re: Sick of it....time for options
Talk to member zookfest, he had a safari with a aftermarket turbo fitted, it had an aftermarket diesel pump on it also, first time i went in it i just about shat myself as it hit boost and pretty much lit the 37s up and it was very reliable to, he did a trip around the south island and said it was great around the hills etc.
He didnt do the mods but knows a bit more about it than i do but what i do no is that theres alot of power to be made with the right mods.
A v8 safari will be very thursty aswell.
Not a 4wd but before the 4wds i had a turbo skyline with quite a few mods including aftermarket manifold, i had no probs with the factory manifold but when i went to the afterrmarket one i blew 3 gaskets and had it machined twice before i changed manifolds, i think it comes down to the manifold and how its made - dont give up on it yet!!

This would be exactly what I want.....I tow huge loads....but need a very capable offroad vehicle as well.
It has a top mount turbo now...I will take some photos tomorrow so everyone can see.

Re: Sick of it....time for options
i had the same problem with my patrol when i put a hair dryer on it.to solve the problem i cut the manifold between no 2-3 and no 5-6 and made them into a sleeve type arrangement .this made the manifold into a 3 piece manifold.bit hard to explain but it worked a treat on mine .my flange started out 12mm and ended up about 6mm in the middle by the time i did this mod .my manifold was made out of 1.5 inch waterpipe and i used the next size up pipe for the sleeve and welded it onto one side only thereby allowing it to move in and out (
) with the heating and cooling movement

Awesome....thanks for the contact....i will see him tomorrow
Re: Sick of it....time for options
Pm Darinz off here as well, he has a lot of experience getting the most amount of power out of the TD42's,
Personally I'd stick with fixing the issues you have with the TD42 motor. Ive seen well setup ones and the can haul arse.

Re: Sick of it....time for options
Check with DieselBoy, has his Nissan sold yet ??, If not all the work has been done and you could turn his into a UTE
I'm sure he wouldn't mind
, or put his running gear into your ute put your old motor back into his and re-sell
,

Fitzy...I hear ya.,..and it had crossed my mind....but if I was going to spend 15k and then do a chop...I thought I might as well buy this...and put a dogbox on the back of it....

But I'm thinking 'slight' overkill.

2nd that, did you go see him? or tryed Magoo Mufflers? Im sure making a new manifold or buying a aftermarket one would be the best option.
Another TD42 Manifold thread..

Yep...I was stoked to get the info you guys had given me. Cory is going to start on it next week. Hes building an all new manifold for it......and full exhaust...and is going to intercool it as well for me. Awesome!!! Can't wait
I didnt talk to him aboiut fuel pumps though.....in reading some of the inf on here.......we prolly need to do that as well do we?
Re: Sick of it....time for options
Basicly the more air you add the more fuel you need to add, you can max the factory pump out and get good results but in the end if you happy to spend the bucks and want to up the power figures you will prob need to look into some sort of pump mods further down the track.
Id get the manifold and exhaust done and see how you like it and in the mean time research the pump thing further.

Re: Sick of it....time for options
I talked to corey about fitting an EGT probe...he hadnt done one before... where should it be fitted.....he didnt see the necessity of it.
Re: Sick of it....time for options
If he doesn't think you need one, suggest he start reading a bit about them, and why they can be a very good idea. He may then change his opinion?

fitted to the exhaust manifold. pre turbo. ya can see it here tapped into the bottom of the exhaust manifold. oober easy install.

and why need one? to know how hot and what ya engine is doin, right there and then... no lag in temps like water or oil temps etc.. safe is good bud.

Re: Sick of it....time for options
Good decision to get a new manifold as the one you have is all wrong. The reason being is it lets the exhuast gas expand and that means it cools down and looses energy. You need the manifold to keep the gas as hot as possible and to keep it moving fast that way it transfers as much energy to the turbo as possible.
A cheap reliable way to make a manifold is to use weld bends and tee with heavy wall steam pipe.
As for the VH option, I have one and unless you have a big cheque book forget it. I did it all myself and it was still many thousands but it does have huge amounts of power, more than any TD42 is going to get. (but I did turbo mine as well)
So new manifold, 15 -16psi, intercooled and run egt's of around 500*c will make for a very good reliable tow wagon. It will also go very very well! Don't go to high with boost or EGT's as towing you will really stress the motor.
Is your truck auto or manual as either way you'll need to do some work to cope with the extra power and towing.
Manual needs a new extra HD clutch and the auto will also need new clutches installed.
For the auto you want VH45 clutches fitted to it and a shift kit for the valve body. This does require the auto to be completely disassembled and will mean it gets a complete overhaul but will then mean it is good for lots of hard work and 300,000k's more abuse.
FYI, If yuou have a turbo TD42 and you are towing heavy loads then an exhuast temp gauge is not optional! You also need to be aware that the highest egt's happen at lower revs before the turbo is fully on boost (normally) and when towing this can happen a lot. You can't rely on the water temp to see if the truck is running hot as it takes to long to respond and so damage can already have happened.

If you want to spend big bucks try one of these:
