Poor mileage- Prado 1kz-te

Post by kooze »

Hey, ive got a 96 auto diesel prado picked it up for a great price and its been a sweet truck until recently a mate brought one.
He's getting roughly 100-150 km more out of a tank than me, the trucks are near identical same km's aswell.

Im struggling to find the difference or is there something i can fix , just been serviced oil filter, air filter.
Any help much appreciated

I get average of 600km for 72 litres of go juice. Running from rolleston into Chch so mixture of open and town driving. Get about 640kms from same amount of gas if a long trip (to nelson etc).

265/75/16 KL71s, 30-40mm lift (not sure) snorkel, 3 inch exhaust from dump pipe back, 96 SWB manual. roof rack, bullbar / winch (steel wire) fitted too. No noiceable smoke while driving, injectors serviced last year, just serviced too (maybe its the new oil changing economy)

Am I in the same ball park as you or am I better?
/worse? Economy seemed to drop a touch when I got the snorkel fitted. Would be good to know if I am about average or if I am up/down.

From memory i got 560 from full to when the fuel light came on so 68 litres 12l/100km,thats round town and up Hill a few times .
Got 700km last year (nelson to chch)

265/75/16 AT's
No snorkel of lift yet, LWB,exhaust wise its standard as far as i know.

Do u find the 2nd half of the tank goes really fast ?
Might look at cleaning the injectors

You should be getting 600-700 on the 265's. My best was 745 full tank.
I am running 285/85 and get 550 (read on speedo which is now out 5%)

Most likely aircleaner needs replacing , after that id replace fuel filter, then start looking at things more complex like getting injectors cleaned.
But only do 1 thing at a time so you can identify whats is causing it.

I would be stoked if my prado will do more than 600kmd per tanks. 93 kzj78 prado only does 560 kms per tank n average 73litre back in. Running on 30" ATs auto, snorkel. Installed. Speedo / trip meter is correct coming with gps.

Might take the rack off the roof and see what effect it has. Still 600 odd kms per 70 odd litres seems too low to me. i thought a snorkel would improve things. Maybe the air filter needs a clean (just been replaced though at service) since the last trip.

Yeah the first half on the guage I get about 400kms and only 200 on the second till the light comes on. Still some gas left till empty (about 20 odd litres from what I found online and from on here - 90 litre tank).

Might have a look at tyre pressures too incase they are too low and ruining the mileage per tank.

I guess its the little things adding up that make a difference.

Maybe the old EGR system has gummed things up and is restricting airflow and so thelitres per km is up too.

Different beast. No intercooler and all the aerodynamics of a brick. (not that a 90 series is in anyway like a lambo either :P )

I was talking to my girlfriends cousin, who used to work at Miles Toyota in Christchurch, and he said the older prados, surfs & hiluxs for that matter that run the 1kz's run a lot better if you get a injector flush. They hook the pump while in the truck up to a machine, and run the truck off a special injector cleaner which makes a world of difference. He said it costs about 150.

Cheers
