td 42 intercooler

Hi there, i am looking to intercool my safari, i would like to use a fan and a top mount intercooler , in theory i should be able to screw the fuel up to get a bit more power. the fan would push warm air from the engine down and suck cold air in the cooler.
any ideas to make this go smoothly? thanks.

The one on my td swb '91 Pajero was a nice neat installation and had a fan, seemed to do a good job, I really noticed the difference when I forgot to reconnect one of the pipes.

Why didn't you come up with this idea sooner Kingsley?

I had the perfect intercooler and fan set up complete with heat solenoids etc everything from my Ferrari! (Read - wrecked Pajero!

)

i hope it was a gold plated one.. how would a water to air intercooler go? has anyone tried them on a diesel?

apparently water to air intercoolers work well in 4wds due to the low speed preventinhg good airflow i'm pretty sure i learnt that on here somewhere

Because of the lower speeds involved in 4wding, a conventional air-to-air intercooler (either top mount of front mount) doesn’t get enough airflow to be effective. A water-to-air barrel like the ones from PWR are a lot more effective at lower speeds, but you still need to consider where its radiator is going to be located. On a ute it isn’t a problem, just mount it on the rear roll-hoop, but in a wagon the only suitable place is behind the front grill where it is likely to get clogged just like a conventional front mount intercooler.
Adding an intercooler to a turboed TD42 engine probably wouldn’t give you much power increases, as the standard fuel pump can’t deliver enough fuel to make full use of the increased air (due to cooler air charge) anyway. The intercooler will help reduce the EGT’s though which is a benefit.
I would look at the fuel delivery side of things first and make sure any restrictions to the air intake are minimised before looking at intercooling.

you can mount the radiator for the cooler in the rear of youre wagon (inside)im against putting them in the engine bay.....
and the way i see it is youve increased the surface area for the longer hoses needed which is the way to go
and chuck a donaldson air box in the old girl from a truck to help pump some more air in

it will do more than a air to air cooler
go the diesels

As not to threadjack... for the simplicity of an air intercooler, just throw a 12" fan on top for the slow speed stuff... don't go front mount, you'll fill it with mud and sticks...
