Auckland Tracks

Post by Filthy4x4 »

Hey guys I know this has been covered a few times with the main place to play being woodhill or muriwai.

Im just wondering if theres any (legal) fun tracks to play on similar to Wilsons Road (south head) etc

Nothing too serious just looking at having a bit of a fun trip out for a couple of hours or something.

If theres places to get muddy (and possibly stuck) I would like to hear about them

Cheers

I`ve always wondered about this spot as to what exactly it is,

http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=q&sourc ... 6&t=h&z=16

Not one to just jump onto a track willy nilly !

Note this might not be the spot i`m thinking of, but actually a river. i cant street view :S

If you are talking about the track that goes between Ararimu Valley rd and Campbells road, as far as we can tell, it is a forestry road, not a public unformed road.

Sibainmud still has our map book, so we will confirm that when he gets round to returning it...

Looks to be part of Riverhead Forest and there is no legal access into there. Don't think even Clubs can get access these days.

Zanders Road is a paper road but forestry put an illegal gate across it a few years back. You can still access a key to it through NZFWDA or one of the Auckland based clubs.
Chatham Road is another paper road but not sure what has happened to that.

Also in that greater area there is Boathouse Lane (with another illegal forestry gate, Alpine Road, Hull road just to name a few. Escort Road further north but again had a gate so you had to return and come back out. Forestry probably improved the track somewhat these days.

Zanders is now a subdivision road. Basically a motorway. Still got a gate at one end though.

Yea there are heaps around there, Once it dries out a bit I plan on having another day going over some more of the tracks we found last time we went out exploring.

Also Alpine road is a great road for views, no hard 4wding though.

With Hull road we have to be very careful with how much we use it so as not to get the farmers angry etc. It does go across the paddocks in one place. Nothing major though.

Apart from Zanders road, all of the roads/tacks off Ararimu Valley road are private property. Also the grass/ mud verges on the side of Ararimu valley road are either private property or not suitable to be used for 4wding. We have had a long string of complaints from land owners, council and local residents regarding damage to grass verges and telephone cables in this area and ask every one to keep well away from this area. there are plenty of other places to play where we are legal and don't upset locals. As a side note, locals who ride horses on the grass fire breaks ( including the side of the road) are also trespassing on private property.

Done hull rd a few times now, pretty much need 35's now. If going one truck will need a winch and ground anchor as there a few deep bogs and no trees to pull off. just dont make a mess when passing through the farm and if the pigtailed wire fence is up make sure you put it back. Good fun short road, can take 30min plus, i like to go in from horse shoe and then do it in reverse, makes it a bit more of a challenge.

Yep through that gate, iv never had any problems with farmers, i keep quite low key(not loud and roudy)...... yeah really recomend winch and anchor, a few of the first bogs can be driven around, but after that you have to sit in the ruts and drive through the rest...
