Hey all,

I've done a quick search but couldn't come up with anything definitive.
I'm looking for a LWB Safari and weighing up my options.
I was keen for a diesel 4.2 but a recent chat made me realise the cost of RUC and the inflated cost of registration compared to petrol would probably come out more expensive.
For those with a LWB Saffy, what is your fuel economy?
Please state what modifications you have, the transmission and of course, the fuel you're using.

i know personally that the 4.2 petrols use a serious amount of fuel. go for a diesel.

hell yeah this man is on the money here

i had a petrol for 6 months and man she ate the gas good grunty motor mind, two ton trailor behind and it was like "what hill" "what trailor" etc but man was she thirsty

My LWB High roof 4.2 TD Non Turbo'ed, manual Saffie, with full recovery gear, Factory PTO winch, snorkel and roof rack on 31 inch Mud Tyres (Sumitomo's) with two adults and two teenagers in it returns 10L per 100km for me ... doesn't seem to matter if it's a mixture of highway and city driving i can budget 10L per 100km. off-road on 31's about 13L per 100km

with my 33 inch "war tyres" (Bighorns) I get 12-13L per 100km open road, 15L-17L per 100km offroad/beach driving


servicing costs me around $300 a year but i do all my own oil/filter changes etc.

*note* Turbo'ed 4.2 TD diesels go way better and are more economic than the non turbo models, I'd seriously look at paying the extra coin and getting one thats turbo'ed

The Petrol Saf's are thirsty @ around 13L per 100Km before you put larger tyres, extra weight etc etc 15-18L per 100km id say on 33+ tyres and 19L-22L loaded up and offroad (these figures i got from a Australian 4wd Mag)

personally I still think your ahead in the game owning a Diesel over the Petrol, sure the RUC is a c*nt and rego on a Diesel is just *bend over and take it* material but it nice to know on a full tank I have 750-800km range, never have to worry about carrying extra fuel or too many fuel stops on a long trip. I can get from Hawera to Whangarei (600km) on a tank of gas

My manual shorty td42 on 33s pulls around 11L/100k on the road..not sure off road never really worked it out. RUC is daylight robbery, but then so is when the plug 'falls' off the back off the odometer, not that we would condone that lol

Thats just wrong . What happens when you get pulled over and the odometer checked by the cops?
If the red wire on there happened to have a switch put in, then only the odometer would be affected, nothing else, and could be turned on/off as you pleased (apparently)

Cheers for the advice fellas, it's definitely helped in coming to a decision.
Didn't think the petrol variants would be that thirsty, I'll do some calculations (price p/L vs km/L vs km/pa vs RUC/Reg costs) and make a decision.

Re the plug falling off/switch wired in, I'll make sure mine is secure and untampered with. (If I were to get a diesel)

Petrol seems alright, mine doesnt use much so works out good just filling her everytime i head out nd about, 20bux does over 100km

on my Safari LWB, 4.2 Diesel (non turbo) i get:

Full Tank: About $105-110
KMs: 600

thats mostly open road driving

I run 33's and got a bit of bar work so its not that much heavier to standard ones

all good! and my truck has done almost 500,000 kms

theres a few hills i go up every day, so have to give it a bit of curry. but not thrashing it. i never go over 3,000 rpm, try not to go over 2800

On 35" NA 4.2 modified SWB loaded up for trip, I would have been lucky to get 400k out of the pig. All the petrols over here in Oz seem to be dual fuel.
