KZJ78 Prado handbrake shoes??

Post by rowinz »

Warrant time. Looking to replace hand brake shoes. I know I need to pull caliper off to get the disc/drum off, but I can't see how I can torque caliper bolts back up with the rear shock so close the the bottom bolt (without removing shock). Perhaps I'm missing something. Can someone offer advice?? Do I need to remove shock?

can you bend a cheap spanner to get the angle?

theres an adjuster thingy at the back behind a rubber cover, also theres a bolt hole thingy in the front you can put a bolt in to help push out the disc rotor thingy. i think you can get the handbrake shoes recoated which is cheaper than replacement ones (save your old ones). icedjohno cut some holes in his rotor to help cleaning ... its on his build thread

I just use a goose neck ring spanner.

They can be tight first time off, so you may need a little help with a hammer.Don't bother torquing them. Been in the trade long enough to get it about right. Also put on some anti seize for next time...
As they fill with mud and need regular clean outs.
To get the discs off there are two threaded holes on the face of the disc which you put in a bolt and it jacks up the disc off.

Just make sure you back off the handbrake as it can jam up as it slips off.
Replacing the shoes are a real bit@h....

I have had mine re coated and it was not thick enough.
I found a place that sells aftermarket at a good price.
Only one in the country I think.

I was looking there...found one potentially good one listed, but no-one is seeding...
"Chassis and engine manual for the LC KZJ 70 series with 1KZ-T engine".
