Im already guessing what im going to be told but just in case thought I would post up.
I was driving back from a bit of 4wding today (very casual 4wding) and on the way home my truck started to vibrate quite badly I thought it was the engine playing up but have put it down to the gearbox.
Its fine from 1st -3rd (slight vibration at the very top of 3rd) but 4th and 5th gear vibrates really badly under load but its fine cruising and decelerating.
My gearbox has been a bit hard to get into 1st and reverse lately and my guess is one of the bearings has/or is about to collapse.
Anyone had this problem before? It still drives fine it just vibrates under load
Cheers
Caleb

Cheers for the help guys
What do I look for in the UJ? Just excessive play?

If there is excessive play then that is one reason for the vibration, I had that with my UJ I would get a vibration at a certian speed, one of the roller bearings in the cap had discentigrated in to nogting, new UJ problem fixed. If the drive shaft is unbalanced this will cause the vibration.
Cheers.

like most would agree before you go tearing the box apart check for the easyer things
did you get hung up at all? bent a dshaft? damage unis?
or maybe if thrashing it the raw 2lte power might of damaged a 200km old uni?
are ther the right amount of bolts in all dshafts an x members, engine mounts?
you recently did an engine change and im assuming you had the xmember out?
check the front engine mounts, are the bolts stil in there. are the mounts coated in mud? i had a new lux [work] that slowly built up a annoying vibratin and it was from me not waterblasting the mud / stones out that was getting stuck in around engine mounts.
are thigns like unis an mounts coated in mud?
have you given it a good water blasting?
the raw power of one of my diesel lux's damaged a uni to the point it collapsed [ it was quite old and poorly maintained] it would roll along fine but the slap/twist as it tried to disintegrate under acceleration was very noticeable. mad for a very feeble meek trip back home. there was a lot of "slop" in it when giving it a hand twist test. what are yorus like?

Put new UJs in. Another driveshaft will cost you around the same money and it still only comes with old UJs in it. I'd replace both while you have the driveshaft out, call it preventative maintenance.
Go new UJs that way you know they will last.

I managed to find a driveshaft for half the quoted price of getting 2 new ujs. If it happens again I will get a new pair of ujs. cheers

Just bear in mind, that surfs (from what ive seen) have no drive shaft loop, so if a universal joint fails and the shaft lets go expect some mega carnage.

I was more meaning this, In my opinion it would of been better to replace the universals than the whole shaft. You have just put in a shaft with old universals that you dont really know the condition of.
It may not be a problem, it may be.
