2.8 td runs then stops on some mornings

Post by Nivapulledout »

Hi all

My friends Paj is developing a weird problem. Sometimes in the morning he will start the beast fine and drive for about 3-4 min then it will start missing run rough and then die. let it sit for a min or two and then it fires up with a bit of white smoke then never misses a beat for the rest of the day even if it sits all day. seems to happen if he leaves it for a more than a day and then not all the time.

it seems to me that it is either getting air in the system or a non return valve is letting the fuel drain back to the tank sometimes and so it will only run off the fuel in the pump then stop.

anyone had anything similar?
where is the non return valve located if it has one?

any help will be appreciated.

thanks all

A guy I knew had the exact same problem!! Was an injection pump issue but I dont know exactly what, Id expect air leak, cavitation or internal lift pump???

yea ours had the same problem too at one stage, pump got rebuilt and it was fine after that. I don't know anymore as I was out of the country when it was finally rebuilt so don't know what was wrong with it.

ok cool thanks for the reply, I dont think the whole pump needs an overhaul as in all other aspects it runs fine. possibly when the pumps were overhauled they replaced the one way valve.
the lift pump sounds plausable.is it internal on these?

Yes, Our 2.8 had the same. Would start ok, then conk out after a few minutes. Embarrassing having to coast to the side of the road in heavy traffic.
It is the seals in the fuel pump. Apparently the seals leak and suck oil into the fuel mixture. Let it sit for a while and away you go.
Was quoted huge dollars to recon the fuel pump but ended up just replacing the seals at a reasonable cost. No problems after that.

Cheers for all the replies guys.

Mmm bugger. It is in France and he would have to sell his kidney to pay for a pump overhaul. But he only has one left after paying for his power steer pump replacement. but everything is twice the price of nz and they do shit work.

Does anyone know which seals they are exactly I might be able to change them for him if pointed in the right direction. By the sounds of the last post it is the drive input seal.

From memory the seals were quite cheap - it was the cost of pulling the pump out that hurt.
