Terrano / Navara front diff Q

Post by Damz »

So a few weeks back I snapped about an inch off the end of the drivers side CV. At the same time, the front diff started leaking from around the passenger side shaft output. I cant narrow down exactly where the leak is coming from. Annoying.

My truck has a lot of oil coming from around the bolt with the arrow, should it? Also, the part that bolts onto that piece (a flat silver shiny bit) has some dents in it from the CV being pushed too far towards the diff, anyone seen that before?

Sorry for the shit description, but cheers for the help

Oil shouldn't be coming out of that bolt.
That bolt just retains the short shaft into the diff head.
Un-do said bolt and the whole drive flange can pull off. Best to drain diff oil a bit so as not to make a mess.
My current one has heaps of play in this area too when the inner cv's destroyed themselves
Tin cap ok, just keeps the grease in.
Cheers,
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

Sweet, thanks for that Simon, will take it to bits later today. Hopefully just a seal around the bolt or something, rather than a cracked diff housing.. Though a whole front diff aint too expensive.

Speaking of, if I were to buy a front diff from a Terrano and it happened to be a different ratio to my Navara, I can just swap out the diff head is that right?

Thx again

Yip. The only thing they change is the crown wheel.
There are 5 bolt inner cv variations more often on later and wide body models. Yours are the six bolt type (3x2).
Lucky you can remove the seal carrier easy as too.
What ratio are you using?

Im not sure what ratio mine are, could be worth a look.

Will keep an eye out for the different inner cv too, funny they changed it?

Look on the ID plate.

The five bolt are larger and use 5 fingers instead of 3 on the inner.

Easy fix anyways.
