Hiya all

I'm completely new to the 4wd scene, just emigrated from the UK 4 months ago with the family, now living in Kaiapoi.

I have purchased a 1994 3.5 LWB Pajero totally standard. Been down to the waimak once with a mate, his son and my 2 year old son. All was going well, then got a little too brave(stupid). Took a route with deep ruts and got it stuck, up to the axles :roll:

ooh panic I did, and did I panic. Mate ran up the lane and lucky enough someone in another Pajero came to the rescue with a snatch recovery(lots of laughing and pics taken by them :oops:

). O and that scared the crap outta me, ended up covered in mud head to toe. But was I relieved I was out, and on my way home for a change of clothes including underwear not brown from the mud I can tell ya.

So I think its time after reading some posts on here, to get it kitted out a little better, and some basic recovery gear. Going to get a high lift jack ASAP.

Don't know really where to start with the truck, was thinking of a body lift kit first, would this be best or should I spend my money elsewhere??
This will be the first of many questions I'm afraid.

There is little point in a Hi Lift jack for a shiney vehicle as there is no where to attach it to the vehicle without damaging it. You would probably be better off with an Air Bag exhaust jack.
A body lift will do nothing positive unless you intend fitting bigger tyres and wish them to clear the guards. It will however misalign your fan with your radiator, cause your low range lever to hit the floor without getting full travel, and your main lever if the vehicle is a manual. Leave ugly gaps between your bumpers and body, and make you fail your next WOF unless you pour another $350 dollars into the govt coffers for certification.
You would be better off fitting raised rear springs, extended rear shocks and cranking your torsion bars.

Welcome aboard Daz.

While I am still learning the ropes in recovery and gear, there will be much advice flowing your way to help you out in no time.

I just have a suspension lift, Savero 31x10.5x15 tyres, recovery snatch strop and tow rope, fire extinguishers, shovel, snorkel, PRS Truck and portable radio, inbuilt PC and GPS system, EPIRB locator beacon, first aid kit and rated tow hooks on my Terrano setup.

You should go with someone else for a while. Fitting bigger mud tires and a lift would the go others can suggest the specifics.

As for gear you should have the following

Shovel
Fire extinguisher
First-aid kit
Basic tool kit & Tow rope.
Snatch strap

You will be amased where a shovel will get you out of :lol:

Get a decent set of tyres if you haven't already some tow ropes and snatch strap.. Get rated tow hooks front and rear as well. Come out on a few trips wth us and learn learn, learn. Spring is coming and if anything like last year we will have some form of trip going every weekend keep and eye out. We got one this weekend down the ashley track(not river) if interested.

will have to get together for a meet and go for a play
got a proper snatch strap now !

What can I say but a great big thank you, and I owe you a beer or two. I still have your snatch strap here. Thanks for the offer albundy, I'm a bit apprehensive at the moment after the other week, is the Ashley OK for a shiney??

was up there last sat its ok just take your time and watch others if not sure just pass on it and find safe way and join up with others again

you can keep strap its not very good but its better than nothing

any one on here would help someone in trouble you never know one day you might need help

Welcome Newbie :lol:

Questions are what keeps this site alive, so keep asking!!!

Start with the T's. Tyres and Tow hooks (rated).
The tyres will get you into the shit

and the tow hooks will get you out

Make sure you've got a decent strap/rope to hook onto your tow hooks as well.

Tell ya im driving a standard pajero, and after last weekends escapade it did bloody well I thought(or maybe it was the driver :lol:
