Mysterious 75mm recovery hook

Hi All
I have a 1991 Terrano which has an unrated, commercial, stock standard recovery hook on the front.
The club tells me I need to put a rated one in its place, but the hook already there has a 75mm centre to centre. Most 4x4 rated hooks seem to be 35mm.
So to solve my problem, do I:
- Find a rated hook from a truck at 75mm and install that.
- Drill new holes through the chassis at 35mm (not really preferred)

Pop into Towbar Services for a quick chat/coffee, if its for a certain club ie CCVC it needs to be mounted to a certain spec to pass inspection.

The Club that told you to change the hook should be able to tell you how they would like it done to meet their requirements
other than that the terrano jokers on here will probably be along pretty soon to give you some pointers

I drilled holes for rated hooks into the tie down mounts as its springs steel and F%$king stronb in my mind

What you do is get a piece of angel, 50X50X5 should do, drill holes to match the holes on the chassis, bolt the angle to the chassis using high tensile bolts 8.8 bolts that match the captive nuts in the chassis.
Buy a proper rated tow hook.
Drill holes in the other side of the angle to match the hook. Fit the hook.
The hook will now sit on its side.
Simple and effective.

Thanks, Does it matter if the hook is on its side or vertical? The commercial hook is bolted up through the bottom of the chassis rail. The back mount points will by default put the hook on its side.

Have you seen the size of these hooks. Though not rated they are the strongest part of a D21
I used 2 of these hooks bolted with backing plates to my ARB bar.
Passed club requirments.
I have smashed these hooks through all sorts of terrain.
When snatching out Terrano's and Navara's at Woodhill, I trust these hooks and where they are mounted to.
I know it dosen't help much but it might be worth pointing out.

The idea of rated tow hooks is 2 fold
1 They are rated to take a certain load to not failed.
2 The rated load is exceededby lots the hooks will bend & release the rope thus preventing you from bending your chassis etc.
So massive & strong has its drawbacks.

3 fold even!!!
They are rated so that if over loaded, they are designed to bend and release the rope before the bolts snap and the hook becomes a projectile!!!!

Ahhh the good old days when everyone gave Nibby shit about if his truck would ever go. Of all the people on that trip I think Nibs is the only one that actually is
At the moment that is, the mighty red cruiser is slowly recovering and will be out of intensive care soon

one of the reasons the clubs have developed standard practice for tow hooks and there mountings is to put an end to the endless debate of what is sound engineering and an acceptable hook. if there all the same type style hook rated we know at a glance Its ok. then its just the mounting to assess. that hook looks sound but in reality its an unknown quantity. will it bend straight or snap and become a projectile. no one knows. totally un assessable.
